さて嘆きの壁で祈りをささげる様子をクローズアップすると写真のようになる。壁に手を当て、端から見ていると本当に泣いているように見える。隣で熱心に祈っている黒服の人のもみ上げが長いのには何か宗教上の理由があるのだけど忘れました。
小さい紙に自分のメッセージ（願い？）を書いて、壁の隙間に差し込んでおく。差し込んだ紙はそのままにおいておかれて、自然に地面に落ちたものだけが後で回収されて、まとめて別の場所へ保管される。
嘆きの壁での注意事項。
・神聖な場所であることを理解して、分別をわきまえること
・頭を覆うこと（まるい帽子をかぶること）
・祈りをささげている人たちとの不要な接触は避けること
・禁煙
３番目の不要な接触を避ける、には邪魔をするな、だけでなくもうひとつ意味があるようだ。観光客と見ると近寄ってきて、家族を養うためにお金をわけてくれ、とお願いしてくる人が数人いた。そういう人たちとの接触もなるべくしないでくれ、という意味もあるようだ。あまりたくさんお金を渡さないでくれ、とガイドからも釘を刺された。
壁の近くには、穴を掘ってこしらえた喫茶店やトンネルがあったりする。風情があるなあ、と圧倒されるのと、そんなことしていいの、と心配になるのとがミックスされてとまどってしまう。
