硬いグラウンド

台北市内の小学校も、東京と同じく砂のないグラウンドを採用している。陸上競技場の超小型版のような感じだ。見た目は美しいが、うっかり転べない。痛そうだ。親と周囲の住民に優しく、子供には残酷なシステム。バスケやローラースケート（すみません、インラインスケートですね）、陸上競技をやるだけならいいんだろうけど。
サッカーや野球はどうやって練習するんだろう。こういうところで練習を積むと、どんなスポーツ選手ができあがるのだろう。

スライディングができない野球選手
解決方法：代わりに陸上の短距離走を練習して、スピードを補う。打った直後にバットを投げ捨て、地面に手をつき、尻を高く上げて走るのだ。監督とかコーチが「ドン！」と掛け声を出せば臨場感が増す。

ボールを飛んで捕球できない野球の外野手
解決方法：ピッチャー以外はヘルメットとプロテクターを装着して、アメリカンフットボール選手仕様にする。動作はのろくなるけど、というよりほとんど動けないけど、威圧感は増す。バッターがびびって打てないから結果的には前と同じくらいの失点率ですむだろう。盗塁しようとした不適な輩を二塁付近で叩きつぶすことも可能になる。バイオレンスな展開に観客も興奮して、動員数も増す。いいことづくめだ。攻撃側にフェアではないので、ついでにバットに釘を打ち込み、ボールも鉄製（棘つき）にして・・・

スライディングができないサッカーのディフェンス
解決方法：代わりにバスケットボールを練習して、あのディフェンスをマスターする。すなわち、敵を囲い込む技を磨けばよい。欠点は股を大きく開くので簡単にボールを通されること、また両手を広げるのでボールをぶつけられてハンドをとられることだけだ。
全く使い物にならんな。

飛べないゴールキーパー
解決方法：代わりに横幅とび（体力測定でやったあれ）を練習して、試合中は常にゴール内を左右に動き続ける。動作が速ければ分身の術へ昇華させて、敵を撹乱できるぞ。本番の試合では土ぼこりが舞うだろうから、なお都合がいいだろう。

車の壊し方

かなり昔の話題らしいのですが。

movie trailers

Watching movie trailers on Apple site is one of the best ways to kill time.
* Trailers are always interesting than the movie itself
* It costs nothing to watch.
* Thanks to the excess supply of movies, new blockbuster is added almost every day.

A good trailer is seducing. It arouses interest and leads us into paid service - See you in the theater, honey (sometimes I prefer seeing her at the street vendors somewhere in Asia).

A great trailer tells everything, like this one or that one. Hollywood is the only place on earth where spending $100million to build an entertainment which looks like worth 2 minutes, no more, is allowed.
Thanks, I can save my money.

Type in a question at the title bar and it gives back the 'answer' a.k.a. closest search result. Certainly there is no Big Brother on the other side but it gives us the illusion.

The definition of computers in Hollowood, from movie cliches:

• High-tech computers, such as those used by NASA, the CIA, or some such   governmental institution, will have easy to understand graphical   interfaces.
• Those that don't, have incredibly powerful text-bases command shells   that can correctly understand and execute commands typed in plain   english.

Success

According to Ryu Murakami, my all-time favorite writer, success is defined by the following three criteria.

1. Have a fulfilling job.
2. It also pays enough to support your lifestyle.
3. Have a small community that you trust and fall back on.

Good, I am gonna use this definition. They sound true to me (though there are a lot of truths), and look achievable.

台湾のゴルフ場

先日、一時帰国した日本から台北へ戻る飛行機上で、台湾でゴルフを楽しむという中年男性のグループに出会った。日本からゴルフ場とホテルを予約して、飛行機は別途手配したらしい。

・台湾のゴルフ場は日本の同等レベルのゴルフ場と比較して、３分の２の価格
・よって、飛行機とホテルの金を入れても同等または割安
・冬になると日本のゴルフ場は芝が白くなってしまい、雰囲気が出ない
・台湾のゴルフ場は手入れが行き届いている（ゴルフがまだ上流階級に属しているおかげもあるらしい）
・ゴルフのパック旅行コースはあることはあるが、割高。個人手配と違うのは空港とゴルフ場との送迎の有無だけなので、特に魅力はない

年に４－５回、台北へ２泊３日のゴルフツアーにでかけるそうだ。出費がかさむのではないですか、と聞いたら、いや、おかげで余計な金を使わなくなったよ、とコメントをもらった。いつもゴルフツアーが念頭にあるから、自然と無駄な出費が減ると。

話してくれた方は５０代後半くらいの、ドラマであれば部長Aまたは専務Bとして即エキストラ出演できるであろう外見と雰囲気の持ち主だった。自分が最も偏見を持って、毛嫌いしてきた年代だ。だが話を聞いているうちに、毛嫌いどころか彼に対する親近感が生まれているのを実感して驚いた。それは爽快であり、同時に居心地が悪い感じだった。

親近感を覚えたのは、自分達の手で旅行を手配し予算を管理する姿勢、客室乗務員の対応が遅れてもたいして気にしないだけの度量と経験（台湾人とのつきあいを経てきたのだろう）、基本的に人生を楽しんでいる態度、全てが交じり合って「個人として生きている人」と半ば無意識に判断したからだと思う。自分がそうありたい、と望む姿を、自分がこれまで忌み嫌ってきたはずの人の中に発見した。そして居心地が悪くなった。

実際に人と接すると、一刀両断に世代や団体を判定してきたはずの自信と根拠が簡単に崩れてしまう。また、単純な切捨ての底の浅さを自覚して、恥ずかしくなり居心地が悪くなる。

One of the most interesting epiphanies I've had over the last few years seems on the surface like a paradox: "help" in Office is mostly used by experts and enthusiasts.

I didn't know the experts do read the help.
Wait a minute, wasn't it on purpose that Microsoft made the Help inaccessible indecipherable, in order to keep three million jobs working for the next version of "xxx for dummies/idiots/starters/everybody"? What is he wondering about?

Anyhow, it is still great to know what those guys are doing out there - with another celebrity Microsofter.

Yes they might not always be telling the truth, yes those posts might be disguised version of sales pitches (which I honestly don't know), but so are us. It is not about the amount and accuracy of knowledge we gain. The point for us is to have a sense of companionship and empathy with those on "the other side". I think it works for them, too.

The closer the distance, the more difficult judging Microsoft (or any other corporate) becomes. Our voice become muted since it is hard to criticize acquaintance and because we realize they are smart as hell and know much more than we thought they did (they work in Microsoft or equivalence, remember). Inevitable but still it is scary to lose our confidence.

Let's pump up this idea. The sense of being lost, not sure anymore about the old world, the Matrix experience, is occurring to everybody these days thanks to technology and dominance of English as a communication tool.

Those who held huge power continue to have more (well I heard somewhere that truly rich guys never lose their assets),
Those who held moderate power turn their anger and frustration to public since they are afraid of losing everything (and frequently they do),
Those who held slightly less power embrace the new reality since the situation became even and they still have enough power to stand up again,
Those who never held any power falls even lower since they have to abandon what little power they were starting to gain.

(Power includes influence, wealth, health, and wisdom)

It is the second and third group that are making the news, that are the majority, and ultimately that decide the future. I would like to belong (and stay there for a while) to the third group, which contains the biggest amount of fun (ups and downs) and - (I believe) the group that look forward to making the future a better one.

Who is really in charge, the artist or the producer (and songwriter)?

Robert John "Mutt" Lange, the guy behind the curtain, taught me two things. One is to throw away the illusion that the artist is always the creator. The other is that just because you wrote the song doesn't mean you get the credit (or at least recognized by everybody).

Well he is now hooked up with Shania Twain (and wrote all of her hit tunes) and is finally recognized outside the hard rock industry. Def Leppard seems to be wandering in the limbo haunted by Mutt Lange's legacy.

ありがたい日本食・別にそうでもない日本食

せっかく台湾にいるので、現地情報もどきを提供します。
台北ではかなりお手軽に日本の食物が手に入る。中でも、「これは実にありがたい」と感じるものは：

モスバーガー

• ハンバーガーが食べたい時（マクドナルドはいっぱいあるけど。）

• 中華料理を食べたくないとき（体調不良の時は余計に）

• 食べながら本を読んだりパソコンを使ったりしたいとき

実に、実に便利です。値段も日本より割安。

キャラメルコーン
甘い味付けのスナック菓子が食べたい時には本当に重宝する。スナック菓子は辛い味付け、と国際規格で決まっているらしくて、一人で奮闘する彼を応援する意味でもちょくちょく買う。しかし値段にジャパンプレミアムがついて、日本の１．５倍だ。やはりバッシングされているのか、それとも本当に重宝がられているのか。

出前一丁
台湾には山のように現地産のインスタントラーメンがあるが、どうせジャンクフードを食べるなら慣れ親しんだ味のほうがいい。しかも値段は日本より割安。ちなみに日清カップヌードルはスーパーに行けばあるが、プレミアムがついて値段は日本の１．５倍する。
そういえば香港には出前一丁に具を入れたラーメンを店で売っているところがあった。一杯２００円くらいで、具は鶏の腿だったりしてかなり豪華である。即座に入って食べました。

「実はそれほどありがたみがない」ものは：

吉野家の牛丼
全然興味がわかないのは、牛丼の味付けがそもそも台湾料理に近いからだろう。他に何もない時にだけ、行ってみた。日本と同じ味だった。

居酒屋
値段が日本より高い。酒を飲まないので今は特に行く理由がないですな。

その他日本料理店全般
だって台湾料理店の方が安くて、おいしいと感じるから。味の違いがわかるほど食べた歴史がないからだろうけど、現地料理であればだいたいどこへいってもおいしいと感じる。

最近、知人が日本から食料を配給してくれるので日本食をいくつか再認識したところでもあります。

• 茶漬け

• お粥のレトルト

• グリーンティー

ストックが切れたらどうしよう。

あまり高級とはいえない品々だけど、よく考えてみると日本食の強みは懐石料理や寿司よりも、お菓子とインスタント食品とモスバーガーに集約されると思う。ジャンクフードであるにもかかわらず、繊細かつ病みつきになる味わいを持ったものって、他の国にはあまり無いものだから。

1. Look at the thickness of the pages left.
2. You might think it is thicker than you imagined.
3. Why do you think so?
4A. Because I want to read more.
4B. Because I want to justify quitting right away by imagining what a waste of time and energy to continue this long....

Here are three memorable actors who have faded away into history. Well, I have little interest in what they are doing now... IMDB shows the latest status, though not always correct.

Scott Baio
He was playing a high-school nerd in Zapped! who gained a superpower following a failed scientific experiment. This B-class comedy was aired several times on Japanese TV during the 80s. Why that much? Probably because it was awfully cheap to acquire the right, and (I guess) because it had high ratings. The actings were horrible, humors were mediocre at best, but the pacing was good and most importantly, it offered a couple of nude scenes. Boys and dads got a chance to see real tits while claiming they were watching non-toxic "high-school comedy".
I can still sing the title song.

Ralph Macchio
The Karate Kid... He must be the weakest Martial Arts Champion in movie history. He even got an Oscar nomination...no, it was his master. Good old days. Keanu Reeves might be insanely jealous of Ralph, after going through The Matrix and still criticized that his Kung-fu was amateurish.

Emilio Estevez

The last time I saw him was in Mission:Impossible, almost ten years ago. No credit, 10 minutes into the movie and he gets smashed into the elevator shaft forming a human sandwich. It was one of the most memorable scenes, though.

ライブドアの件で

久しぶりに更新して、また日本語でも書きまじめます。中国語ではいつになるのか。。。。台湾に住んではや１年ちょっとになるが、「書く」のはいまだに鬼門だ。精神的に苦手なんだろうけど、中国語で書く、と想像しただけで心臓の動悸が早まるのがわかる。うーん。

ちょっと外した時事ネタで、ライブドアの一連の騒動について。
あの社長が犯した最大の罪は、これから会社を興して一旗あげようとする連中が資金を得るチャンスを潰したことだと思う。これからしばらく、起業家にとっては「死」の時代が続くのではないか、とそれが不安だ。金はないけど若くてやる気とアイデアがある、それを武器にしようとしたらどっこい、それだからこそ「いや、遠慮しときますわ」と銀行から言われてしまうんだろう。
堀江氏は力があるからいずれ這い上がるのだろうが、僕がもし起業家で、この事件のおかげで起業計画が潰されてしまったら彼を許さないだろう。彼に全ての責任はないのを百も承知で、それでも許さないだろう。

よくわからないのは、日経の株価全体が一時急に下がったことだ。ライブドア一社だけなのに、なぜ？外国の投資家が日本の株を売ったのが原因だ、とおぼろげに聞いた。東証が本当にあわてたのは、ライブドアの株が落ちたことより（当然だ）、全体が大きく影響を受けたことなんでは？腐ったリンゴを取り去ったはずなのになんで安く見られるの？と。気になる。

ウェブを散策しているうちにこんな文章に当たった。

ライブドアの直近の財務諸表なんかを見ると確かに証券周りなどの売り上げの占める割合が多かったりもしますが、その企業の設立当初から今に至るまでその屋 台骨を支えてきたのは間違いなくライブドアが持っている確かな技術で、日本のウェブ関連企業の中でもその技術レベルの高さは、その辺でなんとか 2.0 だとか声高に言ってる企業なんかよりも遙かに高いと思ったほうが良いでしょう。
おおそうだったのか、全然知らなかった。
梅田望夫
「粉飾したかどうか」とかそういうこととは別問題として、ライブドア経営陣は、少なくともある時期以降、自社の成長を、M&Aと提携戦略とブランド戦略(堀江ブランド)を軸に、スピード速く展開しようとした。自社が有する「高い技術」は、それを支える「基盤技術」として位置づけた。誰も持ち得ない「戦略技術」を開発し、それで道を切り開こうとする「技術指向の経営」ではなかった。
ああ、すごく納得。前の文章を読んだ後では余計に。

技術がものすごくても、それを武器にしよう、という発想はあまり日本ではないようだ。戦略以前に、多分、自分たちがどの進んでいるのか、それとも遅れているのか、よくわかってないんじゃないだろうか。たとえば以前、、携帯電話でこのことを感じた。３年前の日本の携帯電話は、世界の最先端を突っ走っていた。今Nokiaが宣伝しているビデオカメラ型の携帯よりもっとすごいのを、松下が発売したばかりだった。見るたびに「なんでこれを海外に出さんのだ？」と疑問に感じつつも、「きっと海外では興味ないんだろう」と思い込んでいた。
今、NokiaやMotorolaやSamsungが機能てんこ盛りな携帯電話を出していて、逆に日本の携帯の方がコピー商品に見えてしまうくらいだ。「もっと早く、がんがんに海外進出すりゃよかった」と泣いている日本メーカーの担当者がいっぱいいるのでは？

また、ちょっと前にとある台湾の方から言われた。「日本は一番いいものはいつも国内にもちますよね。台湾では一番いいものは輸出にまわしますよ」
これは「そもそも外の様子がわかっていないから、出すべきものがあることもわからない」という現象のことを指しているのだろうか、とふと考えた。本当はどうだろう。最先端のものはいつも国内消費、は確かにそうだけど、それはどれだけ意図的な行為なのだろうか？

もといライブドアについて。他には特に気になるところはないです。あ、堀江氏のブログを拝見。コメント数が４桁を記録したのを見たのは初めてだ。すごい。これだけのアクセスをこなせるのだから、ライブドアの技術力は確かにすごいのだろう。これを売り文句にして商談をしているライブドアのセールスマンが絶対にいそうだ。

Technical Writing is not about writing

 Continuation from the last entry. I said I am not sure technical writer is the profession if you want to write. Well, how many people want to read technical or business documents? We all just want to DO it, don't we? The whole purpose is to convey a message in a simple and clear way. Writing is just one of the useful tools.

I now think it is about trimming. Cut, cut, cut, add, and cut. Can I express what I need to say most, in the fewest characters possible?
So many things call our attention, yet the time is getting shorter. A single day used to have 50 hours. Now it is 24. They say you can do a lot of things within 24 hours. Yes, but.

By the way, I believe Kiefer Sutherland is going to replace John Travolta's position. They have lots of similarities. They both had their ups when they were young (John in Saterday Night Fever, Kiefer in...well...well he made out with Julia Roberts anyhow) and both had suffered from a long slump. John came back with Pulp Fiction, Kiefer with 24. I thought (actually wished) Kiefer Sutherland would end up as a cheapter version of his dad. They can play both good guys and bad guys. That is already rare enough, but their real talent shines when they play villains; so cool and attractive.

John Travolta is getting old: Kiefer is still in his 30s. Hollywood always needs a charming villain. Let's see what happens at the 4th franchise of Mission:Impossible or Spider-Man.

Back to writing: When we read something, if we don't get the idea in 30 seconds we become bored, angry, and miserable. It's a bit scary to think we have shortened the attention span according to hollywood movies but the fact is fact, and honestly, I am getting addicted to that pace either.

As long as the message is understandable, lean, and entertaining the medium can be anything. And reading is usually the most time and attention consuming method. I think we still rely on writing largely because we are used to. If someone invent a tool that churns out visual messages as we type or speak into it, or even better a tool that is hooked to our brain and takes out the image (with audio) directly, then that's the beginning of the end of writing era. It is not so far away.

I belong to the old generation so I prefer writing/reading. Here are three books I enjoyed reading and met the mantra: understandable, lean, and entertaining. (By 'lean' I mean every word is there for a reason: the books are fairly long)
