Am I the only person to imagine Bon Jovi's second album, 7800 Fahrenheit, instead of Ray Bradbury's novel?

I grew up with Ray Brudbury's books but never read Fahrenheit 451, which is a longer piece. His nostalgic, facsinating, and magical world lies in the collection of short stories. R is for Rocket is my favorite.

In my favorite story, a boy has an astronaut as his father. Long absense and high risk of danger are part of his dad's job description but the boy was nevertheless fascinated by the exotic world he has never been to. He collects the star dust from dad's space suit, put them in a bin and imagine the world out there.
Dad says to him, don't become an astronaut. "When you're on the earth you crave for space: when you're out in the space you swear you'll never leave your family alone."
But one day dad decide it's the last voyage he's gonna make, and take off to the space. The boy and mom waits on the earth, talking what would they do when something happens to dad. "If dad's spaceship falls on Mars, I will never watch Mars. On Venus, never that direction."

And what happened to dad? He and his spaceship fell on the Sun. So the boy and mom sleep with the window shielded when the sun is out, wake up at night.

テレビが映らないし時間もないので、連日このサッカー大会の様子をインターネットのニュースで読んでいる。
ヨーロッパの大会なので、ヨーロッパのゴールデンタイムに合わせて試合時間が組まれる。日本では深夜も深夜、午前３時ごろに勝敗がわかったりする。明け方に腫れた目を抱えて、速報に書かれてある試合の様子を読み、自分で勝手に様子を想像して楽しむ。文字で興奮することを積極的にやったのは久しぶりだ。実際に見るよりいいかも。

現時点で、準決勝の４チームがそろったので勝敗を予想してみる。
準決勝第一：オランダ VS ポルトガル
本拠地の強みを生かしてポルトガルの勝ち。ただし、死闘という言葉がしっくりくるほど白熱し、消耗する試合になる。オランダもポルトガルも、相手をひきつけてカウンター、という単調、確実、しかも疲れない攻め方をしないからだ。オランダは全員で攻めて全員で守る、という伝統を持つしポルトガルは変幻自在なパス回しを誇りにしている。どちらも、ただ勝つだけでは意味がない、自分たちのスタイルで勝つ、というかっこいいけど損なプライドを持っている。
この組み合わせはマライア＋ホイットニー、曙＋サップ、バター＋あんこ並にに無視できない。ボールと人が縦横無尽に走り回り、正確無比なパスとシュートが入り乱れるはずだ。サッカーファンでこの試合に興味がない、という人はいないのでは。

準決勝第二：ギリシャ VS チェコ
チェコの勝ち。チェコは強い上に運がいい。ギリシャはフランスを破って、満足してしまっているはずだ。それまで決勝トーナメントに出た経験などないくらいに実績の無かったチームなのだから、ここまでくればもういいか、になっている、はずだ。
この前のワールドカップでは韓国とトルコが勝ちあがったけど、彼らだって準決勝で敗れた。同じことが起こる。
チェコはフランスやグループリーグでのポルトガルのように、油断してギリシャに敗れることがないと思う。確かにとんでもなく強いチームなのだけど、傲慢になれるほどの実績がないからだ。その上８年前のヨーロッパ選手権で、決勝でドイツに負けた経験を持っている選手がまだ現役でプレーしている。絶対に気を抜くことはないし、今度は絶対に優勝する、と決めているはずだ。

決勝：チェコ VS ポルトガル
チェコの勝ち。理由は、消耗してないから。
ポルトガルはグループリーグからずっと、体力と神経を限界まで酷使している。
グループリーグではしょっぱなでギリシャに負けて、最初から「もう負けられない」モードに入ってしまった。その後２試合連続して勝って決勝トーナメントに出たけれど、地元の応援は心強いと同時にプレッシャーにもなる。しかも決勝トーナメント一回戦で、イングランド相手に９０分＋３０分延長＋PK戦、というなにもそんなに盛り上げなくても、てな試合をやってしまった。オランダとの試合でも同じレベルの消耗が待っている。その意味では、オランダだってポルトガルと同じしんどさを味わっている（グループリーグ初戦を落とし、決勝一回戦でやっぱり延長の末PKで勝っている）。
だからポルトガルだろうがオランダだろうが、チェコと互角にやりあうエネルギーは残っていない。

当たるだろうか。僕はかなり高い確率で当たる、と信じている。これに不確定要素があれば、ポルトガルの代わりにオランダが決勝に残ることくらいだ。それでも、チェコが上述した理由で勝つ。

この予想というのは本当に病みつきになる。ほとんど自慰の世界だ。新聞や雑誌やテレビで解説者がもったいぶっていろいろ話すけど、彼らはオ○ニーを観客や読者に見せているのだ。やるなとはいわないけど、金をとるのは勘弁してもらいたいな、と思った。

The ego climber

These days when I get frustrated, when I feel like throwing everything away, when I am pointing fingers to anybody around, there is always one cause involved. I couldn't do something as smoothly as I imagined. Such as:
* Spent an entire day to translate a one-page English letter into Mandarin Chinese, and 20% was completed. I didn't even know what went wrong and what went right. In the MS-Word document, the red wavy line (error) and the green (warning) were the only key. It is frustrating when you cannot delete even a single of that red and evil line after spending one hour.
* Went to a party and after two hours I felt much lonely ;-)

After spending a good 30 years of frequent frustration, I now started to question the whole situation. Isn't it that I am trapped in some hole, while digging it by myself? Do I feel angry and resentful for the right reason? Am I doing something meanless, or even doing something self-destroying?
Maybe yes, and here in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (thanks Josh, for choosing this wonderful book) it gives me exactly what I need to know:

When you try to climb a mountain to prove how big you are, you almost never make it. And even if you do it's a hollow victory. In order to sustain the victory you have to prove yourself again and again in some other way, and again and again and again, driven forever to fill a false image, haunted by the fear that the image is not true and someone fill find it out. That's never the way.

To the untrained eye ego-climbing and selfless climbing may appear identical. Both kind of climbers place one foot in front of the other. Both breathe in and out at the same rate. But what a difference! The ego-climber is like an instrument that's out of adjustment. He's likely to miss a beautiful passage of sunlight through the trees. He goes on when the sloppiness of his step shows he's tired. He rests at odd times. He looks up the trail trying to see what's ahead even when he knows what's ahead because he just looked a second before. He goes too fast or too slow for the conditions and when he talks his talk is forever about somewhere else, something else. He's here but he's not here. He rejects the here, is unhappy with it, wants to be farther up the trail but when he gets there will be just as unhappy because then it will be "here". What he's looking for, what he wants, is all around him. Every step's an effort, both physically and spiritually, because he imagines his goal to be external and distant.

For the whole life, regarding myself as a victim was the primal response to a difficult situation. But the truth is, I must admit, that I was doing something out of my ego and the reality smashed it. Which were always good for me.

Dawn of the Dead, Revisited

ゾンビのリメイク版を見た。
最初のバージョンは日曜日の昼間にテレビ放送されたものを見た。インパクトは強烈過ぎて、その後長い間その映画について考えることすらタブーになった。何が怖かったって：
・どこまで行っても逃げられない（世界はゾンビで埋め尽くされている）
・これまで自分が知っていた人が違う生き物に変わってしまう
ことだ。

殺人鬼や怪物の類なら、いないところへ脱出すればなんとかなる。しかしゾンビの世界は救いがない。どこへも逃げられないところから、物語が始まるからだ。ゾンビ自身にも救いがない。自分たちのえさを自分たちで減らしているのだから（いったんゾンビにかまれるとゾンビになる）。それから自分の知っていたはずのものが得たいのしれない何かに変わってしまった、というのは日常でもときどき経験する。人間関係で。そんな怖さをついてくるなんて、ずるい。

リメイク版はよくできていた。吉野屋の牛丼のように、早くてうまくて安い、と開き直って作っている。おかげで最後まで飽きる瞬間がなかった。たいていカルトな映画のリメイクを作ると昔のファンから罵倒されるもんだけど、この映画は評判がいい。リメイクだからゴージャスに作れ、でなくホラー映画なんだからこう作っちゃえばいいのだよ、とスタッフがわかっているのだろう。とにかくテンポよく、わかりやすく、という姿勢が見えてすがすがしかった（かつ、どろどろしていた）。
この映画のもうひとついいところはそんなチープなスタイルを維持しつつ、スタッフとキャストは一流どころをそろえた点だ。Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Mekhi Phifer, どれもすばらしい役者さんだ。ホラー映画に感動する演技はいらない、ことをわかってやっていることまで含めてすばらしい。脚本家はScooby Dooの実写版を書いたそうだ。ちょっと微妙。

一流の人材で、二流のエンターテイメントを作るのは意外と難しいようであまり聞かない。でもうまくいくと、結果的に歴史に残る傑作として認定される場合もある。レイダース／失われた聖櫃のように。スピルバーグは子供の頃に見ていた安っぽい冒険活劇を作ろうとしたらしい。確かにあの映画が偉大な理由は、どこまでいっても漫画の世界に浸りきれることだ。今回のゾンビはその域には達さないだろうけど、きっと長い間愛される映画になると思う。

Director Steven Spielberg was quoted as saying: "I made it as a B-movie... I didn't see the film as anything more than a better made version of the Republic serials."

それにしてもリメイクしたり再発行したりするたびに翻訳のタイトルを捨ててカタカナの直訳に走る例が最近本当に多い。確かに何か新しくなった感じはするけど、タイトルからわかりやすい意味が完全にはぎとられるというものは違和感が残る。「ドーン・オブ・ザ・デッド」といったって、「ドーン」の意味がわかるひとが何人いるのだろう？いっそ「死者の夜明け」とでもべたべたな訳をつけるか、アルファベットを残してもらいたい。「ゾンビ」ならわかりやすいのに。
何故ここにきて「意味」を奪い去って「記号」にしたいのか。それがそんなに格好いいことでもないのは８０年代に経験ずみではなかったのか。こてこてに「意味」を入れようとするのも嫌いだけど。「愛と青春の旅立ち」の原題はAn officer and a gentleman（士官と紳士）だった。

キャッチャーって、どう努力しても野球選手にしか思えない。

数少ない良心的なタイトル：

映画自身がとても面白いだけに。。

最後に、主演のサラ・ポーリーが他に出演した映画として「死ぬまでにしたい１０のこと」がゾンビの宣伝文句で書かれていた。狙ってやっているのなら最高だ。死ぬまでに・・・を見て感動した人がドーン・・・を見たときの感想を知りたい。どっちの映画でも彼女はたくましく生きようとするのだけど。

Selfish Blogging

I am writing for myself. There are a few ideal readers I put in my mind when I compose the sentense, but after all it's all about me. That's not pretty, and here is another thing that adds to it. I think the best metaphor to describe my writing is excretory. Sweating, bowel movement, leak, puke, masturbation, whatever that comes out of my body and whatever that makes me feel better afterward.

The difference between writing and real excretory is that I can live without the former. But if I don't write, something is still needed to be flushed out of me in some way, for example anger, euphoria, self indulge, eating disorder, manic-depressive. Call them the drastic medicines. From outside it seems I am breaking the balance, but from the internal point, maybe I am trying to restore what's broken by overreacting. The serial killer in American Psycho murdered ordinary citizens periodically (admittedly I didn't read more than 50 pages) to keep him sane in the materialism world of yuppies. That's an extreme case for sure but I can never say that's far from reality. Luckily my urge don't go for the destruction mode but in the essence what's the difference?

The drastic medicines do help me at least temporary but not without flaw. They lead me to nowhere. Use some of my energy, restore something and at the same time break something in a lesser way, and that's it. I wait for another saturation point which I can not predict when and how much.

So far writing is the only 'medicine' I found out that can lead to something. Writing directly connects to pushing out some dirty or unresolved thing (also a bit of good thing, I would like to think)in me. And while reviewing each entry I look at them really close, more than when we check our No.2 every morning to see how healthy we are. Gradually I come to understand what the hell is going on inside me. I can call that hope.

But excretion is an excretion, for now. Occasionally somebody says she or he likes my blog, I always feel embarrassed more or less no matter how honest their comment are. Should I forget that weird feeling and try to be 100% positive about my writing? Well, I don't think so. It's related to the wrong side of excretion, called pride. I feel proud of my writing. That means I am proud of myself - a single negative comment still defeats me or infuriates me. If I delete the embarassment and leave that proudness as it is, the writing (and eventually I as a person) will easily turn into self-indulge. The feedback and the embarrassment as well as the delightment makes me keep a distance from that pitfall and lead my energy to write a better piece, I hope. That's why I write in the blog instead of my private diary.

Now I am not sure how much I have self-indulged in this entry....

Endless loop

頭がさえていろいろなことをすらすらと片付けるときと、何も考えられなくなってしまうときが一日の中で両方起こる。
以前はどちらかだけ、ということが２－３日続いたことがあったが、最近はサイクル（周期）が短くなって、だいたい２－３時間で調子よい、悪いの波がやってくる。
その小さな波は、基本的な調子、という大きい土台の上でうねっている。この土台はうねりはしないけど、上下はする。
（上、がよくて下、があまりよくない）

何も考えられなくなる状態を、以前は「スピードが落ちた」と捉えていた。遅いんだから、なんとかして早くしてやろうといろいろな刺激を加えてみたりした。食べる、運動する、などとにかく体と心を活性化させるものならなんでも知っているものを試した。

でも最近になって、「遅い」というのは違うのではないか、と考えはじめた。遅いのではなく、他のことにエネルギーをとられているのだ。そしてその他ごとが何なのかよくわかっていないから、あるいは他ごとの存在にすら気づいていないから、そしてそんなことを考える余裕はないから、遅いんだろう、と決めてしまう。

そう考えたきっかけは自分が使っているパソコン、その上で動くメールソフト(Outlook Express と言います。この時点で、技術に詳しい方なら「自業自得だ」の一言で片付けてくれるでしょう）が絶不調になっていることだ。メールを読む、書く、送る、受け取る、一連の作業を行っていると、キーボードが反応しなくなることが起こる。メールに関わる一切のことが、何も操作できなくなる。そのうえメールの画面も表示されなくなる。何事かと思って各ソフトの状態を調べるとメールだけ「応答なし」と表示される。何も反応しません、だ。

そうやってパソコンが黙り込んでいる間、CPU（パソコンの頭脳の役割を果たすチップ）は必ず、１００％で高速回転をしている。チップを冷やすためのファン（プロペラ）も、勢いよく回る音がする。つまりメールソフト上で何かをすごい速度で実行しているのだ。その何かが終わらないから、メールソフトは次の命令（キーボードの打ち込みとか）を受け付けられない。

何がこれを起こすのか、さすがに半導体の業界に３年いるとわかるようになる。無限ループというものに陥っているのだ。何かのはずみで、プログラム上のある部分を、何度も何度も繰り返し実行してしまい、他のことに移れない。パソコンは最高スピードで動いている。はたからみたらとんでもなく「遅い」ように見えるが、遅いのではなく次の動作へ移る方法を知らない、のが正解だ。

その状態から抜け出す方法はパソコンを買い換えたりメモリを増設したりして、「速く」することではない。繰り返しやっている無駄な作業を、やめてしまうことだ。ここではメールソフトをいったん閉じて、もう一度動かす。もしくはパソコンを再起動する。もしくはそのメールソフトを使うことをやめて別のもっとましなソフトを買う。なんだっていいのだが、今行っている無駄な作業を放棄する、のが手っ取り早い解決方法だ。しかし、そのまま動き出すのを待つ、という選択肢も実はある。ちょっと待てば動くことがわかっていれば、少しパソコンから離れて、また戻ればいいのだ。なにがどうなっているかわかりさえすれば、ストレスは少なく、結果的には作業が進む。

で、それが自分にも当てはまるのだ、と考えた。何か先へ進めないときはいつだって、何かに気をとられているはずだ。そして、その気をとられている対象について、同じことをぐるぐるぐるぐると考え続けているか、とらわれているから何も他のことができなくなってしまう。これなら理解できる。本当に遅いだけなら、時間はかかるけど疲れることはない。だが、たいていの場合何も考えられない状態とは、すごく疲れやすい状態でもある。明らかに、脳は回転しているのだ。多分、無駄に。

問題は気をとられていることそのものではなく、何に気をとられているかわかっていないことだ。あるいは、気をとられていることにすら気がついていないことだ。からくりがわかってさえしまえば、そのまま待つことも、気分を変えることも、電源オフ（寝る）だってできる。やりようがある、とわかれば気分も楽になってそれが結果的には無限ループから脱出するきっかけにもなる。

気をとられているものの正体はすぐにわかるものではないけれど、こうして考えることで気は楽になる。

STAR Workshop

This workshop was a great opportunity. I met a bunch of wonderful people there. Made new connections as well as reaffirming existing friendship, and those weren't temporary associations which usually are bound to fade away quickly in order to keep good memories intact. It sounds like an overstatement but that's what happened.

Here is how I found it.
One year ago the company I work for moved the office inside a venture habitat called Sunbridge located in Shibuya Mark City. They had an email magazine aimed at people who are interested in entrepreneurship and business trends in Japan. In one issue EA-Tokyo's seminar was introduced (Allen Miner, founder of Sunbridge, was the first speaker).
Led by curiosity (I had no idea what entrepreneurs do in general) I joined one session. And another. And more. One of EA-Tokyo's sponsers was (and still is) Jim Hunter('Coach'), president of PMP Japan/STAR workshop. He was always at the seminar so I, who felt like an imposter among ambitious businesspersons, even had a couple of occasion to talk with him and learned about his business.

I had little or no idea what STAR workshop was really about because I have no interest in workshop in general. But I was interested in Coach, and also thought I can trust him as a person. And a couple of my other friends, whom of course I trust, also recommended the workshop. Time to go for it. Here I don't describe the workshop content but try to write down how I felt. I do this because describing the course doesn't mean anything to anybody. The secret is not written in the syllabus.

At the workshop there were a couple of familiar faces and it made me both comfortable and nervous. Comfortable because I always get charged meeting them (even when we are discussing about something grim), and nervous because they would know if I lie or make unrealistic promises.

It started rather slowly for me. Everybody in the workshop are adults - we understand it is our decision to join this workshop and there is no point in expecting an immediate and practical effect, doing nothing. It all depends on how we act. But still, I was nervous at the beginning. Do I have to hold each other's hand and sing a stupid song? Is it just about filling the "what is the color of your parachute" form? The nervousness dissolved quickly, since I saw the facilitators themselves believed in what they are doing (later we learned that they were former participants of this workshop). I want to say this aloud to anybody who opens a seminar or thinking about that. Do YOU believe in what you are doing?

It's all about the people. I suppose I learned some techniques in this class. Mind-mapping, 10 steps, building self-esteem, so on. But the best thing is the time and the memory we shared there during the two days. Today when I feel I fell into a pitfall or stuck in the moment, I mutter some of the keyword such as cancelling the negative thought. But it's not the keyword itself. It's the accompanying memory that works wonder. The image of the facilitators and participants practicing, feeling the effect by themselves. And my own experience of doing that. When I say the keyword (or use other tricks) memory of those moments bring the needed energy and wrap me up. I am in that particular moment, when I felt clearly that I can make a difference.

The seminar is about creating that field of energy with other people, and store it in our body so that we acquire a springboard we can always come back to. Whenever we get lost or defeated, we can go back there, jump up again. The keywords and other tricks don't do any wonder by themselves, they are just there to help us getting to that particular point. I can shout "Nobody can defeat me" 1,000 times but....
Reading the contents never substitutes the actual experience. And getting the right cloud of people is more important than making the outline look attractive.

I thought I lived a hectic life, but you see, on average I tak 6 hours sleep a day. Considering I slept 8 hours a day in average previously, this two weeks are shuttering the myth I had about my sleeping hour.

I can get along with fewer hours of sleep. Although it has a pitfall, it is indeed a liberation to realize such thing.

Japanese soccor players

今回は海外へ移籍した、またはしている日本人サッカー選手について考えたことを。最近のくせかもしれない。

日本のサッカー選手がイタリアやイギリスの一流サッカークラブに招待されるのはジャパンマネーが期待できるから、とヨーロッパのマスコミどころか一般人まで言い切っている。名波がベネチアで１０番をもらえたのも、高原がリバープレートでプレーしたのも、もっとさかのぼれば三浦カズがイタリアでプレーしたのだって、実力はともかく国際舞台での実績を考えれば他の国の選手だったらありえなかったはずだ。アジアのサッカーシーンで何が起こっているかなんて、ヨーロッパでも南米でも誰も知らない。この前のワールドカップだって、直前になって日本と韓国が地続きでないことに気がついてあわてて飛行機のチケットを購入したジャーナリストが少なからずいたと聞く。僕たち日本人だって、韓国のリーグで何が起こっているかなんて全く興味はない。歴史も、実力もあちらのほうが上か、互角であるにも関わらず。

中田英寿が注目を浴びたとき、彼を野球の野茂になぞらえたことがあった。何だ、本場でも通用するんだ、と日本のプロが気づいてしまったんだなあ、と思った。禁断の果実を食べたといえばいいのか、俗な例では初体験を済ませた後のように、一度知ってしまったらもう二度と元へは戻れない世界（あるいは時代）に入ったのだ。
それは今でも変わらないけど、「本場で通用するのは野球よりはるかに難しいことなのでは」が最近は加わってしまった。中田の後にはまだ誰も続いていないから。ところどころがんばっている選手はいるけど、日本人が落とす金を抜いてもなお世界的に認められる選手が他にいない。小野はすごいらしいけどまだ今はオランダリーグで活躍している段階だ。イタリアやスペインやイギリスや、やや下がってドイツで活躍して初めて名前が知られる。

海外にちょっと行ったけどあまり水が合わなかった、やはり日本で精力的に活動しよう、てな感じで「いつでも戻れる」だったら簡単なんだけど、どうも海外に行ってちょっとつまずく人は、日本代表の座をも同時に失ってしまうようなのだ。フランスワールドカップの前後に何人か海外へ行った人が、中田以外にもいた。
城はワールドカップの直後にスペインでプレーして、レギュラーをとれずに帰ってきたと思ったらJリーグでも活躍できなかった。２００２年のワールドカップの時には２０代の後半だったから、本来なら一番油が乗っている年齢なのに。
川口もワールドカップ直後にイングランドの２部リーグへ行き、最初はなぜ川口ほどの選手が２部なのだと頭にきたけど、そこでレギュラーをとれなかった。今でもヨーロッパにとどまって努力を続けるのは敬服する。でも、代表のキーパーの座は楢崎（名古屋在住）に奪われたままだ。
前園はワールドカップ前に、ブラジルへ行って修行したりした。でも結局代表になれなかった。フランスの時に、日本のフォワードは点が取れないとかチャンスを作れないとかいろいろいわれた。何故前園を呼ばんのか、少なくとも一対一でドリブルはできるぞ、と思ったのは僕だけではなかったはずだ。でもやっぱり何かが足りなかったんだろう。

彼ら「海外組」の絶対的な能力は、強い連中と一緒にプレーすることで伸びているのだと思いたい。でも、代表になれるかどうかはそのときの「勢い」で決められてしまうようだ。だったら日本の地元のチームで努力するべきだ、よほど自信がある以外は現実離れした余計なこと（本場で挑戦する）を夢見たりするのはやらない、と考えるプレーヤーがいてもおかしくない。海外へ行くことで結果的に活躍できる場を狭めてしまったように見えるプレーヤーは、実際にどう思っているのだろうか。

単なる推測だけど（僕の文章では推測以外の部分の方が少ないのだけど）、誰も後悔していないと思う。結果がどうあれ、自分はやりたいことをやった、と思えることの意義はとてつもなく大きいのだ。３０歳になったら引退がちらつくような職業では、目の前のチャンスを逃すことのリスクは想像がつかない。今でもいろいろな選手が海外でプレーを求めて出る。彼らも先例から、成功する確率が異常に低い、といい加減わかっているのだろうけど、それでも行く。

なんでこんなことを書くかというと、自分のこれからのことを考えると弱気になることが時々あるので、元気付けるためです、はい。

ちなみに中田選手がパルマで成績不振の戦犯扱いされていたとき、なぜか安心したことがある。中田も所詮人間だったか、そうだよなあやっぱり難しいよなあ、と安堵したのではなくて、彼はファンから不当な扱いを受けるほどのプレーヤーに成長したんだ、ぱっと出の客寄せパンダではなく結果を出して当然の存在とみなされているんだ、と改めて感服したからだ。これについてはまた書くかも。

This email (possibly spam) came in today as bcc. They are getting smarter. I fought for 10 seconds whether or not to click that hyperlink. I gave up, made sure the virus protection is working on my computer, opened it in a new window. The designated website was not found on the server.

It was still too dangerous to open, might be infected to a potentially harmful virus or somebody stole my corporate address book :-)

Business in China

中国語教室で、中国の人たちが買い物をする方法についての話題があがった。先生曰く、一般的に次のような傾向があるそうだ。

・必ず何箇所も店をまわって、一番安いものを買う
僕はめんどくさいから、買い物そのものがイベントでない限り（例えばノートパソコンを買い換えるとか）、インターネットで通販ができるなら速攻で買ってしまう。ソフトウェアなんかはほとんどインターネット経由でAmazonで本を注文するのも似ている。この場合は便利だけでなく安い、といいことづくめだ。
店をまわるだけで時間と交通費を消耗するのだから、そんなことは結局高くつく、が僕の考えだがそれは仕事が保証されている人間の考えだ、と今日気がつかされた。金が余分にほしけりゃ仕事の量を増やせばいい、という考えだ。
でも毎日の仕事が保障されていない状態では、時間よりも金、のほうが貴重な資源になる。金はつかいたくないが時間ならくさるほどある、が普通だったら確かにこの考えは合理的だ。

・商品についての情報をこと細かく聞いても、商品を買うという保障には絶対にならない。金が出るまではわからない、のが商売の鉄則であるようだ。それさえ理解できればストレスがたまることもない。
HISで飛行機のチケットを購入すると、成田空港の何番カウンターでチケットを受け取る方式になることが多い。こんなのは中国では一般的にはならない。金を出したなら、引き換えにチケットをもらわなければ安心できないからだそうだ。

・高いものをいかに安く買うか、が有能さ、無能さをはかるものさしになる
上海が特にその傾向が強いみたいだ。値段交渉がめんどくさいからと、定価で買ったことがばれると、馬鹿にされたり非難されたりすることもあるようだ。

なんか日本の大阪に似ていますね、で締めくくられた。

聞いていて感じたのは、中国でモノを販売する仕事を始めるのは今の日本以上に危険な行為なのでは、ということだ。日本ではブランド品を直営店でのみ販売する、でない限り１００円ショップのような店がつくられ、客がいなくなる可能性が常につきまとうな、と思っていたが中国はその比ではなさそうだ。出来合いの商品をどこからか仕入れてきてそれをさばくだけ、あるいはよそに似たようなものがあるものを高く売る、ではもうこれからはだめなのではないか、と今日はじめて本気で考えた。というより、あきらめがついた。

何をいまさら、と言われるだろうけど今まで「安いもん勝ち」は結局自分たちの生活から余裕と豊かさを奪い取る、と考えていたので、できればそうであってほしくないな、と思っていた。多少質が悪いものを高く売っていたり、どこにでもあるものを適当に並べて適当に売ることは確かに褒められた行為ではないのかもしれない。でも誰もが商売の方法を必死に考える必要もない、とも思っていた。普通に生活ができればそれでいい、程度のポリシーでやっていても、別に悪くはない。できの悪い人、やる気のない人、ぼーっとしている人、悪意のある人、そういう人たちもごちゃまぜになってみんなと生活している状態が許されることこそが豊かな社会の条件の一つなのではないか、と今でも考えている。

やる気のない人間、最高のサービスを提供できない人間、自分のやりたいことがはっきりしない人間、自分に向いた職業についていない人間、前向きにものごとを考えられない人間には居場所のない社会があるとしたら、そんな社会にはあまりいたくない。僕はできればネガティブなものにとらわれないようになりたい、と考えているが、それでもそうした負の側面を許容できることこそが、真の豊かさなのではないか、と考えている。

何もかもやる気をなくし、周りに多大な迷惑をかけ、やりたいことなど何一つわからず、毎日会社にいけば机に座るだけで吐き気がする時期があった。会社員としては三流だ。こいつはどうしようもないな、と思われつつもなんとかやってられたのは会社と周りに余裕があったからだ。
僕はこれではいかん、と考えて会社を辞めることにしたが（その場にとどまって状況を変える気力・体力ともになかったが辞める、となると初めてエネルギーが沸いた）、それでも自分から辞めるのではなく早々に首にされていたら、いったい自分はどうなっていたか考えたくない。僕は周りの寛大さに、余裕に助けられた。これからだって、二度とやる気を無くすことはない、とはまだいえない。そのときに社会に余裕が無かったら、かなりしんどい思いをしそうだ。

金曜日の夜ということで、さあもう疲れていいよ、と体が休息モードに入っている。そうなると脳だけでなく体全体がしびれだして、何も集中できなくなるのだ。寝るしかない。
ニコチンが切れたとき、酒が切れたとき、もこんな感じがするのだろうか。
本当はたまった写真全て（５００枚ほど）を整理して貼り付けたかったがだめです。地道に少しずつやります。

President of the United States

昨日に続いて人物とその役割について考えている。今日はアメリカの大統領。

物心ついたときにアメリカで大統領を務めていたのはカーターだった。１９８０年よりちょっと前だ。その頃僕が知っている大統領というのは、「世界で一番偉い人」だった。

その頃、マルタ島の映画館で毎週欠かさず新旧・傑作駄作ごちゃまぜの映画を見ていた。ほかにやることがなかったからだが、その映画の中に「スーパーマンII」があった。今から見ると相当にちゃっちい特撮と無理なストーリー展開でも当時はみんなだまされて、空を飛ぶ気分で見ていた。その中で、スーパーマンと互角の能力を持つ３人の悪者がアメリカの大統領を追い詰めて国を明け渡すよう要求するシーンがある。確か、大統領は「世界平和のためなら、従おう」といって彼らの前に跪く（ひざまずく、という漢字があるのですね）のだ。映画を見ているこっちも、本当に世界全体が屈服したかのように悲しくなってしまった。子供心に、アメリカの大統領は世界の平和と秩序を象徴していた。スーパーマンの人間版だった。

レーガンが登場して、神話に少しほころびが出た。彼の能力については今でもほとんど理解していない。ほころびは、彼が政治家を志す前の職業だ。映画俳優、しかも大根役者(B級俳優）だったというのを知った。バック・トゥ・ザ・フューチャーの中でも冗談のネタにされていた。マイケル・J・フォックスが未来から来たことを信じようとしない博士が３０年後に何が起こっているかを聞きただすシーンがある。
「じゃあ答えてみろ。アメリカの大統領は誰になっている」
「・・・・・ロナルド・レーガン」
とマイケル・J・フォックスが決まり悪そうに答えるシーンだ。
大統領という存在の神々しさは薄れたが、アメリカという国に対して抱く幻想は強化された。あそこでは売れない俳優でも大統領になれるのか、すごいなあ、だ。

ブッシュ（親父）が登場して、イラクに対して湾岸戦争をしかけた時点で、さらに幻想は減った。具体的に何が悪いとか間違っているとかはうまく言えなかったが、中東の小国家に対して本気で戦争をしかけるところが大人気ないというか、弱いものいじめをしているように感じたのだ。正義と世界平和の秩序のためだ、と彼は言い、アメリカ国民の大多数もそれを支持し、日本は黙って従った。僕もそんなもんだろうか、と納得しようとした。少なくともこの大統領には戦争というたいそうなことを始めるだけの決断力がある、いいか悪いかは別にしてリーダーとして必要な資質を備えているのだろう、と考えた。
１０年近くたって、その戦争が世界平和と秩序維持のためだけに行われたわけでなく、大統領に決断力があったかどうかもあやしいことが明らかになったきた。イラクにしてみれば用意周到に仕組まれた罠、と考えたほうがいいことも。
大まかな事情はこの本を通じて知った。
もうひとつ面白かったのはスリー・キングスという映画だった。湾岸戦争で描かれなかった実態をドキュメンタリー風にしたてて、かつ娯楽として面白いものにしていた。イラク兵がアメリカ兵を捕虜にして、湾岸戦争の目的について尋問するシーンがある。
「お前らは何のために戦争をしている」
「世界の平和と秩序を守るためだ」
「ふざけるな。こいつのためだろ」
といってイラク兵はアメリカ兵の口に黒い原油を注ぎ込むのだ。
こんなことをｘ０億円かけてやってしまえるというのはすごいなあ、と今度はハリウッドに対して幻想が強化された。

クリントンの時代になって、僕の中でアメリカ大統領という存在はついに「神」から「人間」に格下げとなった。ブッシュ親父の時は神でも間違えるか、だったがクリントンは違う。やることなすことあまりにも人間くさい。サックスを吹いてみせ、女子大生とXXな関係を楽しんでいた。とんでもなく優秀なことは間違いないのだろうけど、人間すぎるくらい人間だった。そう思っても悪い気分ではなかった。
女を見る目がなくても（何が悲しくてモニカ・ルインスキーに手を出したのだろう）、職務遂行能力さえあればOK、と判断を下すアメリカを見てそうだよなあ、と感心していた。昔、日本にも愛人から匿名で訴えられて失脚した総理大臣がいたことを思い出した。もともと能力がなかったからそれでもいいけど、能力があってもスキャンダルひとつで失脚したのだろうな。能力があれば島耕作のような女関係をもってあたりまえ、などと考えるつもりはないけど（しかもあの漫画の中では奥さんの方から離婚を申し出ている。都合がいい話だ。売れるわな。というか自分も読んだのだけど）、リーダーの仕事は決断することなのだから、それ以外は大目に見てやればいいのにと思う。件の首相に決断力があったとは思えないけど。

ブッシュ息子の時代になり、アメリカの大統領に対しての幻想は幻滅にとってかわられた。無知で粗野で尊大であっても自信がありそうに見えればそれでOKなのか、と彼を選出しただけでなく再選までしそうなアメリカ人に対しても幻想が崩れた。だいたいどこの国だって、指導者に選ばれる人間は１．強い（そうに見える）　２．失業を減らす（約束をする）　この２点を押さえていれば人格異常でも犯罪者でも独裁者でもOKっぽいが、アメリカもやっぱりそうなのだろうか、と考え始めた。
ブラジルには黒人がいるのか？という発言なら僕だって何年か前やったことがある。アフリカから売り飛ばされた奴隷の多くが実は北米ではなく中南米に送り込まれたことも知らなかった。聞いた話では、彼は大統領になる前にアメリカ・メキシコ・カナダ（パスポートいらない）以外の国へ行ったことが一度しかないそうだ。
悪口を言うのは僕一人ではないようだ。３週間アフリカをぐるぐると旅行した際に、ブッシュのことをよく言う人間は白人・黒人・黄色人種を問わず一人もいなかった。アメリカ人にはほとんど会わなかったので聞いていない。

Tom Cruise

トム・クルーズについて考えることが時々ある。
完璧主義だとか、あの笑顔で食っているとか、実は背が低いとか、そういうことではなくて（そういうときもあるけど）、彼の映画でなぜ脇役が光るのかについてだ。
彼の映画ではほぼ必ず彼一人が主役だ。他の人と主役を分け合うということがない。１００億円かけて作る映画で、毎回そんなことが許される俳優は現在何人いるのだろう。メル・ギブソン、トム・ハンクスぐらいかな。ブラッド・ピットだって大作の「トロイ」に出てるけどあれにはオーランド・ブルーム＋エリック・バナという保険がかけてあるし。

要するに毎回、彼を中心に映画が作られる。それにも関わらず、トム・クルーズの映画といえば次世代のスターたちが脇役としてブレイクする場所、としての印象が濃い。
Interview with the Vampireではブラッド・ピットが、
Jerry Maguireではレネー・ゼルヴィガーとキューバ・グッディング・Jrが、
Minority Reportではコリン・ファレルが、
The Last Samuraiでは渡辺謙が主役以上に注目を浴びてきた。
そういえばジョン・ボイトもMission Impossibleで久々に大作に出てから復活した。

じゃあトム・クルーズは存在が薄いのかといえばとんでもなく、上にあげたどれでもやっぱり彼の映画に仕上がっている。Interview with the Vampireだけはブラッド・ピットの映画、と言ったほうが正しいけど。監督の好みだろう。
彼は脇役に頼る必要はない。しかも絶大な権力をもっている。例えばThe Last Samuraiは
・日本が舞台
・しかも時代劇
・しかもトム以外だれも有名スターがいない
と、制作費に１００億円かける理由はトム・クルーズ以外見当たらない。日本での興行収入は相当見込めるだろうけど、本国アメリカで惨敗するかしないかはトム一人の肩にかかっているはずだ。（結局アメリカ国内で１００億円以上の売り上げはあった。きっちり結果を残したので誰も何も言えないはずだ）
だから仮に撮影中に渡辺謙がすごい演技をしても、トムが「このままでは食われる」と思ったら渡辺謙の出演時間を強引に減らすことだってできる。プロデューサーも務めているし。

誰だって寛大なふりをすることはできる。でも彼のように、映画評で「トム・クルーズよりもXXXが光った」と書かれて、平然とそれを流して、かつそれを何回も繰り返しているスターを僕は他に知らない。で、今になっても彼は過去のどの脇役よりも強い主役として生き残っている。

彼は「いい映画を作る」を常に最優先にしているのではないのだろうか。何がいいか悪いかは色々意見があるだろうけど、少なくとも自分を露出することを常に念頭に置いているわけではなさそうだ。映画をよりよいものにするのであれば、他の人間がとんでもない才能を見せてもOKなのだろう。

毎回、彼の映画をつい見てしまうのは次のブレイクを発見する楽しみがあるからだろうか、と思った。

Trapped in the old habit

When I traveled around Africa a couple of months ago, I met a Japanese backpacker in a bed & breakfast in Windhoek, capital of Namibia. Watching his behavious and talking with him gave me some insight about why we behave like the way "Japanese tourists" are.

He was sitting alone in the chair, reading a Japanese book in a shared bedroom when we arrived to grab the other beds. An Aum-Shinrikyo lookalike dressed in white shirts and white pants with long hair, his physical appearance made me think of a monk or a lone wolf who just cannot help being himself. He could have been 35 or 40 years old, and his mental age seemed much younger than that. It doesn't mean he showed childlike curiosity or liveliness - he seemed ignorant. He was, I guess, avoiding the other backpackers. Not because he didn't want to communicate with them but because he didn't know how. The other backpackers were playing billiyards or kept drinking or chatting or whatever but outside the room and spoke English.

Next morning I woke up at 4:00 AM and couldn't continue sleeping, so I kept watching the ceiling thinking what woke me up. Something clicked in me, something that I had been thinking for a long time. The image of that guy, who was alone reading a book and is now sound asleep somewhere in that room, came back to my mind. It was just like one of the playback in the variety show in which the supposedly funny scene was shown repeatedly (three times in average) to make the blunder joke funnier or to save something out of that misery. I tried to let the image flow and capture the feeling in my words. Put out some specific keywords and say it in a very little voice - and see how much it resonates in my body. This time, I came up with this sentence.

He is still in Japan

He is in a place far, far away from the home country and why on earth should I think in that way? I tried some more.

He is still in the Japanese context

This might be closer. I continued searching in my gut, trying to compose an explanation and let the gut judge if it is correct or not. (This is the first time I became aware of my thinking process - to me it's the gut that does the critical judgement, not the brain. The brain is there to compose a sentence as a translator, thus I wrote in one of the blog entries). Something tells me that that guy belongs to the same world as that of Japanese office workers. What is it?

They don't want to deal with strangers

Ah, yes. This makes sense. They as well as he are trying to avoid being involved with strangers. According to this idea, his English skill is not the biggest obstacle, although he can make a good excuse out of it. His unwillingness to communicate with strangers made him behave like that.

Later on that day I had a chance to chat with him. He had never been to the place where we traveled, so I started sharing some information, half from my willingness to share information and make sure he doesn't miss the show, half trying to see if I can see more of him - the inner him that is hidden under that white and loose dress. Soon a flash of delightment and an innocent smile came up on his face. He looked like a puppy found out by his master in a rainy day. If he had any tail, perhaps I could see it moving like a fan. He might have been looking for somebody who speak Japanese.

His behaviour reminded me of myself. When people are chatting in crowd and everybody else but I is with some partner or friends and everybody know each other.... The easiest way to escape from this isolated feeling is to retreat into my room and stay there alone, but of course that made me feel worse. I not only felt like a loser but also, my remorseful feeling turned into a sense of hate and anger and it started to roar around in my body, digging up every bit of my memory pitfall and dragging out those little goblins who also started to run like rats and it also digs up my even older memories..... the vicious cycle. Reading books doesn't help. Watching TV help me feel better for a short period of time, only give me a harder moments later. The next morning I will wake up with a battered sense. The only way I could rest those goblins at peace is, that I become closer to the very crowd I ran away from. And when I find someone with whom I can talk easily, I would show the same delightment as he did.

I heard and read about a lot of Japanese youngsters who were trying to get away from their harsh reality, at least for a short time. But by taking the above mentioned attitude, I guess some of them might still be involved in the old way of living, thinking, and acting and they are not sure what they are doing. Some of them might get frustrated or even worse, desperate because they find nothing is changed after all. I followed this step when I traveled around South East Asia just after graduating from my university.

What is needed is the determination that we are getting out of the old habit. That determination doesn't has to be solid. Fragile and soft decision is also OK as long as it really hurts when we think of going back. That attitude makes us try new things, talk to new people, see things in a new way. We don't have to go anywhere, though going somewhere makes it easier. Some of those Japanese backpackers, including myself, even they themselves are trying to get out of their old world, actually lost the default purpose and unconsiously went back to their old habit: to be surrounded by things that are familiar to them. They cannot feel proud of themselves because they are repeating the same thing over and over again. Nothing is going to change, and they don't even realize it's their fault, not others such as teachers or society or parents.

Maybe the reason I woke up in the morning was that I realized they looked alike me, or I resembled them. I also read lots of books, not famous at socializing and tend to sit quietly. But from that moment, I became aware of why I shouldn't retreat into the cozy room alone unless I want to sleep right then. I know sometimes I do need to read and don't want to talk with anybody but even in that case, I decided to be somewhere there, within reach. It's not pretty, but who cares.

EA-Tokyo one year anniversary 2

The second half of what I thought in this discussion titled "What does it mean to create value?". Jeff Char joined as one of the speakers as a replacement for Caroline Pover.

The discussion was thoroughly enjoyable but is wasn't exactly what I expected. The expectation was that all panelists, each of them having a long and tough history of associating with the customers, would share a similar opinion on what value creation means and as a result agree on one or two core aspects.
The method of how to deal with customers effectively might be different among various industries, but after all it all goes down to sense of satisfaction, which won't be so different. This is what I thought and I unconsciously wanted them to follow a single line of discussion, eventually leading to a nice conclusion. There is one more reason - I wrote about the importance of chemical reaction in the newsletter advertising this event and I hoped that become real, not just another overstatement. Justification, rather than expectation...

But it didn't happen that way. When it came to value creation and the relevant topic, everybody talked in his own terms or point of view or whatever is based on his history. But they didn't have a conflict or disagreement either. I suppose the theme and the related experience was too personal for them to answer in a generic term. Obviously they have pondered this question deeply and still working on it.
The air of pondering influenced me and as a result, I was thinking what the value creation meant to me. Perhaps there were other people in that mode too. Forty thinkers - Rodin might had gotten his inspiration for Le Penseur with this question.

I couldn't get my thought together then so I will put "what does it mean to create value?" question in my to-do-list. This question is tricky. We are not comfortable asking it, because it sounds like we are a hopelessly lazy person who is always looking for a low-hanging fruit, or a hopeless dumb who never got through enough hardship to get his own version of the answer. I don't want to hear this advice in a patronizing tone: "You will know once you have enough experience". And of course today's bookstores are filled with similarly titled hardcovers.

One speaker, Tim Williams gave a simple and powerful comment: Ask the customer, "Do you want to make more money?".
It might be close to cure-all solution. I would like to romanticize a more sublime version for the time being.
Money alone doesn't make you happy, but you can avoid (most) unhappiness - this is the motto I have now.

commitment

金曜日に落ち込んでいたが、よく考えたら落ち込む理由は大してない。
財布の中に金は入っていなかったし（それは財布とは言わないのだが・・）、カードが使われた形跡も無い。免許証などの再発行の手続きが面倒くさいだけだ。携帯電話は博多駅にあった。メールは復旧した。客先で指摘されたり発見したりしたことは全て自分の糧になる。何よりも人間関係で困っているわけではない。
不幸、という言葉を使ったのは間違いだし失礼だ。自分の予想していないことが起こった、それだけですね。しかしそれも変だ。予想したことが起こる、なんてことは現実には無いから。あれば僕は今すぐ新興宗教をはじめる。もしくは投資家になる。

なぜ必要以上にこたえたのか、を辿った結果思い当たるのは「自分は現実にcommitしきれていない」という最近の疑問を、それらが間接的にでも刺激したことだ。日本語に直訳すると「現実と深く関わろうとしていない」になるかもしれない。責任をとろうとしない、になると気合が入っているというか、自分で自分をその他大勢の人と一緒にまとめてしまうような感じになるけど。そのときは気づかなかったが、多分自分に対する自信のようなもののレベルが少し下がっていて、それでささいなことに反応しやすくなっていたのだろう。

これまでの人生を通じてずうっとまとわりついてきた問題なので長い描写は避けるけど、最近になって再び現実とのかかわりかたを意識し始めたきっかけのようなもののひとつは他の人たちが書いているblogだ。うろうろとwebをさまよいながら日本語で書かれたblogを読んでいくうちに、だんだん居心地が悪くなってそのうちやめてしまう、ということをこれまでちょくちょく繰り返してきて、その都度それは書かれている内容に興味が無いからだ、と片付けてきた。

そういう感想を持ったblogには共通点のようなものがある。ひとつは書き手の仕事と生活に密接した内容であること、もうひとつは書き手がトピックに対してある程度決まった視点（ものの見方）を持っていることだ。僕はそれらを見て、業界用語が多すぎてよくわからないし、どんな意見が出てくるのか予想がつくのもあまり興味がわかない、だからあまり読む気が起きない、それでいいか、としておいた。これらの条件にずばり一致しても、楽しく読みつづけるblogもあるのであまり強く言い切れないけど。

しかし先日、よくよく考えてみれば居心地が悪くなる理由はもうひとつあった。うらやましかったからだ。
彼らが自分の専門分野について熱心に、楽しそうに語る様子を、そしてblogの内容に仕事や生活と関連した統一性のようなものがあるのを、うらやましいと思ったのだ。自分もこんな風に仕事や生活に関わっていきたい、と感じたのだ。今の仕事やつきあっている人たちそのものに問題などない。自分の関わり方に自分で納得がいっていない、だと思う。それを改めて自覚したので、居心地が悪かったのだろう。
そして視点がはっきりしていることに興味がわかない、と考えたのも違っていた。視点がはっきりしていることのほうに、僕は興味を持つ。その視点からどんな世界が膨らんでいくのか、わくわくしながら読めるから。多分、視点の掘り下げ方が僕の好みに合わなかっただけだ。

そして上記の「blog」を「人となり」に置き換えても、完全に成立する。自分が興味をもったことを生活の糧にして、前進している人たちとつきあっていくうちに、自分の状況について考えなおさないわけにはいかなくなっていった（ああ長い）のだろう。

ではこれからどうするのか、と考えた結果、最近は次のことを意識しながら毎日を送っている。
自分が関わっていくもの（顧客からのメールに回答する、友人と約束した手紙を書く、部屋を掃除する、なんでもよい）を人の影の形にイメージする。
イメージの中で自分がその影にかぶさっていくことで、これからそのことに関わっていくことを自分に再認識する。そのとき、必ず腰からかぶさる。真正面から、あるいは背後からかぶさると気持ち悪いので（気持ちいいかもしれないが）、横からかぶさる。腰を意識しないと、真剣に取り組む意識が作れないような気がしたからだ。頭から、手から、足先から入っていくとすぐに逃げ出すこと姿勢になってしまう。腰から入るとすっきりするのだ。
別に「必ずやり遂げる」と決意するわけではない。単に、逃げないできちんと向き合うだけだと思う。結果として「これはやらない」があってもいいし、ないと不自然だ。

なんか奇妙なイメージだけどこれをやると落ち着くのでこれからも続けるだろう。そのうち意識しなくてもすむようになる、にするつもりだ。以前はこれと似たパターンで「ネガティブな自分と一緒にいる」をやっていた。すごく嫌な気分になったとき、その気分をやはり人の形にして、とりあえず自分の横に立たせておく。飲み込まれるのでもなく飲み込むのでもなく、ただただいっしょにいる。２つの磁石を近づける作業に似ている。反発させて遠くに離れてしまうのでもなく、かといってぴたりと吸い付くのでもない、微妙な距離を保つ訓練だ。最初は努力が必要だったが、これを続けることによってある程度嫌な気分のときでもやりくりが可能になってきた。嫌な気分を消すのが目的ではなく、存在を認めてつきあうのが目的だ。２０年間ほど「嫌な気分は消えるべきだ」と努力して結局だめだったので、あきらめてはじめたらこれがうまくいったというのが正解だけど。今回のはどうだろうか。

Woman's Wit

This April, on the way to Africa, I bought this tiny book (5cm x 4cm) at the bookstore in Singapore's Changi international airport.
Three entries I love:

"Women's faults are many. Men have only two: everything they say and everything they do."

Can I counterattack? There might be a reason why this book is so tiny....

落ち込んだときは

何がきっかけなのかわからないが、関西から出張で帰る途中、新幹線の中で爆睡して目が覚めたら落ち込んでいた。

客先での製品デモがうまくいかなかったからか（動いたけど肝心なところで満足できる性能ではなかった。わかってはいたんだけど改めて指摘されるとううむ）。とある人の意見の鋭さ、業界の動向を知り尽くしてその上でなおもそれに縛られず、常識を疑えるバランス感覚を見て感嘆しつつ自分と比較してしまったからか。eメールソフトが数日間ぶち壊れていて、何も見猿聞か猿言わ猿状態になっていたので新しいノートPCも買ったしさあ読まなくては、と気が付いてパンドラの箱を開ける気分になったからか。最後に出てくるのは絶望っぽいが。日本の商習慣、業界の最新情報をやり取りしていっぱしの「通」になった気分にもまれながら何故かどんどん自分の世界が狭くなっていく（広い範囲の話をしているはずなのにどんどん自分という存在が型にはまっていく、あの感覚だ）ことが原因か。
あるいは奈良についてから携帯電話が無いことに気づいたからか。（そういえば部屋に置き忘れたのかも、と今気が付いて机の横を見たらやっぱり無かった。ああ本当に無くしたのですね。ボディブロー。。）

そんなときはどうするのがいいか。状況を客観的に見る、良いことに目を向ける、思い切ってどれだけ落ち込んだか自己診断する、うさばらしする、を順番にやってみよう。

＜状況を客観的に見る＋良いことに目を向ける＞
先週から今週にかけて自分に起こった不幸を列挙してみよう。
・財布を無くした（免許証と健康保険証とクレジットカードとSUICAと銀行カードとTSUTAYAの会員証とクリーニング屋の引換証と現金X０００円をなくした）
・ノートPCとeメールソフトが完全に成仏した
・携帯電話を無くした

・パーティー会場で初めてリラックスして最後まで過ごせた
・知り合いにしろ初めて会った人にしろ会った人みんなとよい時間を過ごせた
・新しいノートPC（ThinkpadT41）を愛している。前のPCが逝ってしまったから買ったのだが。
・（不幸のリストを見て）こんだけ痛めつけられても今日まで（あまり）落ち込まなかったのだ。すごい。

封筒の中を見たら（財布の代わり）１万円札が２枚入っていた。でも土日をサバイバルしなければいけないので使えない。
みみっちくいこう。
１．マインスイーパ：手軽だが爆弾があまり出ると逆効果になる。
２．DOOMII：中毒症状を自覚して数ヶ月前にアンインストールしてしまった。うかつ。
３．酒：飲めないし金かかる。
４．電話：だから無くしたっちゅうに。
５．やけ食い：食べ欠けのゴーダチーズとヘーゼルナッツチョコ（海外からのお土産に使われるあれ）があったので食った。ゴーダチーズがまったりと発酵していた。青カビチーズを食うのと同じか。
６．やけXX：僕には手軽な△△がある。

まあなんとかなりそうだ。あ、blogのネタができたんだ。良いこともありますね。

Home - office - home - office - home - office - home

Arrived at the office and I realized I needed the USB cable for connecting the digital camera image to my laptop(I am using it for my job) and got back to my apartment, came back, and realized I need the Windows CD-ROM to fix my damaged email software (the third time in two months that I am blocked from the entire email. I must admit it is very liberating - smash them, smash, smash - and I am getting addictive...... ).
In the end the email program didn't come back and the system BIOS is warning another cluster in the hard drive is entirely unreadable and I figured it out that's it. I got a new laptop to replace the whole thing and that delayed the job furthur.

I am now sitting in the office at 24:00 and still haven't finished packing up the demo system which must work at the customer's site tomorrow. So few things have been accomplished today. The key is to enjoy the moment and never think that I "wasted" today.

Let's get out of the positive thinking mode. Sometimes it's better to admit there are days like this. Today I got this brand-new Thinkpad which I am typing on it and it saves me from getting into this wasted mode. I believe one of the best thing about Thinkpad is the keyboard, trackpoint, and the whole rigidness. They always justify the higher price. Gives me the pure joy of using, not just owning.

The first Thinkpad I bought was the B5 size 535 and that was truly a revolution in small-sized laptop. Even now I wish I can keep using it by upgrading the CPU. I loved that and tortured that. Spilled coffee twice (once it smoked and refused to work but then I was an engineer - made a few pipeline and the next moment it was alive again, as if nothing had happened), fell off the table more than five times.

I was supposed to write about yesterday's seminar but will leave it for tomorrow... good night.

EA-Tokyo one year anniversary

So I joined this seminar the first time in three months.
I was a bit nervous, not about the seminar itself, but about the networking session that follows.
The reason I decided to take some break from EA-Tokyo was I felt I was in a wrong place when I attended the last networking session, three months ago. It has nothing to do with the session itself.

It was me, that I felt like an imposter disguising my identity (a corporate troop trying to behave like a independent worker) and robbing the precious time from the serial/first-time/would-be entrepreneur in front of me, by letting him talk enthusiastically about his vision believing he is about to get a valuable connection to an unknown industry. There are not many people who set up a company in the chip industry where I belong - that usually requires a heavy upfront investment and besides, who wants to compete directly with Chinese companies?

I thought I wasn't qualified to be there because I was not an entrepreneur yet. More accurately I tried to think that's the reason, which looks like a legitimate excuse at a glance so that it might protect me from looking like a failure ("Well, you know, I am in a research ..."). But the truth is that I left there because I felt ashamed of myself comparing with others. I felt I was so unstable and fragile without having a goal or purpose in my life, while those people there seemed to have enduring passions and clear visions.

Nevertheless I got back into the networking session and it was different than what I imagined. I talked with several people and I never felt exhausted or depressed or ashamed or whatever negative, I only got energized and two hours passed in a moment. Hmm, what happened?

I guess I felt in that way because I got clearer vision of what I am going to do with my life in the previous couple of months - that shook me off some of the imposter label I put on myself, I guess. Though that doesn't mean I decided to be an entrepreneur, I am more comfortable that at least I am getting closer to a certain class, the group of people who really care about what they are doing and not using their job or positions just to enjoy leisure time or feel secure about their lives. I don't say anything negative about looking for security and stability in life - I mean in my case, I lacked commitment by trying to stay in a confort zone, trying to be an observer and not making my hands dirty. I was abusing my position, that's what I thought.

Maybe I am still in an observing mode, and now I think - if I am going to observe, why don't I get REALLY good at observing? Get into it, welcome to the real world. At least I feel better that I am starting to realize the lack of commitment and the destructive effect it has on me and the people in my inner circle.

One more reason I attended tonight's seminar. I recently started contributing to EA-Tokyo newsletter and I wanted to see by myself how exactly the seminar go. Need to see the introduction I wrote isn't very far away from what the audience really gets.

The World Clock - Time Zones

Today I tried this new feature (new for me anyway) called Quickpost - you open a website and if you find it interesting, jump to the Quickpost website and it automatically generates a blog entry with the title and the hyperlink for that website. All I have to fill in is the additional comment so here I write.

In thirty minutes I will have this weekly conference call which I still don't get used to after three weeks. I am a rather slow starter regarding the conversation - listen, listen, listen, comment, listen, listen, comment, listen, comment & speech, listen, comment & speech & rant & shout.
After a while I realize everybody else but I get turned off. I assume I have to listen more carefully and the next time one more listening period is added..

But maybe that's actually backfiring. Maybe I am not getting a better listener, just getting better at squeezing my energy into the listening mode, while compressing my speaking desire to the limit. So in the long run I will end up like this: listen, listen, listen, listen, listen, speech, rant, rant, rant, shout, disgusted, disgusted.

How can I take a more balanced way of communicating? One key might be in learning how to start conversation with a natural flow. One of the reason I keep listening is I need to feel the air and read between the lines, or I think I need to do that. Catch the wave!

Hm, this conclusion is as encouraging as our prime minister's rants on changing our constitution or sending our troops to Iraq. Or the those pseudo-psychiatrists who appear in the TV saying "Build your self-esteem" to the depressing middle-aged men who are about to throw themselves into the commuting trains.

Starting blogging again

After a long absense, I now think I should start writing in a constant manner.
There are four entried sleeping in Typepad server labeled as draft. Writing the first draft is almost always fun and exciting. The problem is on the editing or reviewing stage - I read each sentence carefully, not to find small errors (they keep shouting at me anyway and a lot of times I hear the shout but cannot see anything), but to trim the sentence so that there are no more or no less than what's needed.
Somehow I thought I should make each entry more compact, more complete in itself.
And then for the next two weeks I wrote nothing. I set myself into the serious writing mode, in which I don't allow any writing that doesn't satisfy Mr.ProofReader inside me. I am not saying I am writing well - quite the opposite, I thought I need that guy to watch out I don't get just self-indulged.
But it's a situation called chicken and egg - I won't improve my writing unless I write something, every day. Which is better, write constantly and wait for my writing skill to improve in time, or review constantly so that I can squeeze the best out of whatever I have now?
I take the former - just do it every day. Write everything in the first try, review it once, upload.
So I won't promise I will write something meaningful ( = I don't promise I do not write anything meanless) but I write constantly. Every day when somebody opens this website they will find something is updated.
For me it's a training - to make myself commit more. It's the end of the fantasy - you can write occasionally and earn money, reputation, and satisfaction.
