Your body knows everything

Read and write a lot.
This is a universal advice for anybody who wants to get involved in active writing. I am not sure if I want to write a fiction but definetely I want to be capable of articulating what's going on in my body. Specially about the so-called gut feeling.
I am fiddling a hypothesis now: the brain merely translates what the body says and it does not create any thought.

Every thinking process is done somewhere in the body, lower than the neck: the stomach or two legs or even the buttock. Let's search for an example. A lot of people have good inspiration when they are fighting with No.2 in the john. I have never had such an experience but it does help me making my head clear. The problem is that I cannot control that by myself. I cannot hold back for long, so I can only enjoy that moment when accidentally I miss the everyday routine and have something more dramatic in the later days.

I admit the above example is very far away from a convincing one, even for me. Anyway I appreciate that we take pleasure in the act of excretion so that even in the most depressing time, we have something to enjoy. The other example - yes, what about this.. whenever I realize I am not doing what I want to do or what I care about, I sense it in my thighs or the upper right corner of the surface of my forehead. It is never inside the brain. At least I don't feel that way.

My conclusion is that the thinking is done at the body, because the signal always comes from somewhere but inside my head. Then what does the brain do? I think the brain is just "translating" the thinking into languages. Zillions of neurons and nerve cells exist just for the sake of translation. Think of heart or kidney transplant. I read a story of a kid who suddenly started to play violin skillfully without any training - his heart was donated from a professional violinist. Now I believe in such stories. We never heard of brain transplant, have we? I bet even if the operation succeeds, it is the body's part which dominates the personality, not the brain part. Suppose we swap the brain between Robert De Niro and the president of the United States, the latter still cannot act at all. But since his translation skill has improved, he will amuse us even more by providing much more political blunder by slipping his tongue. It's time to embed a tiny speakerphone to his ears and let him repeat exactly what's been read in the background.

While in Africa I experienced a couple of moments when my priviously cluttered thoughts suddenly unite together to form a coherent, independent piece of theory-like thought. Those were fantastic moments and I didn't create the thinking in the brain. I did use it to put together the thought and translate it into languages.

旅は人を変えるか

今回３週間日本を離れてみた結果感じたのは、「旅」という抽象的で得たいの知れないものが自分を変えたりするようなことはありえないのだな、というあたりまえのことだった。違う環境では、違う行動と考え方をしたほうが楽に生きられる。だから試行錯誤してみるうちに、普段の生活でもこうすればいいんだ、と気づいたりする。そうやって旅行先でやってみたことを本国の生活でも応用したりすると、それが結果として「変わった」となる、ということだと思う。普段の生活で変化が不足している、のであれば必要なのは旅行やそれに準じた儀式ではなく、試行錯誤のほうだ。旅行先では、嫌でも試行錯誤しなければいけないときがある。その副産物として、自分が変わることが産まれる（ことがある）。

旅行に出ることでそれまでのうっとおしい事柄から一気に解放される、と（少し）見込んでいたのだけど、間違いだった。めんどくさいことが起こる、のはそれまでの生活と変わらない。どこへ行こうとも生きているんだから避けられない。試行錯誤＝めんどくさいなので、旅行中は普段よりかえってめんどくさかったかもしれない。嫌な実感が少ないだけで。

質問：人間関係のわずらわしさが無くなるか
答え：不特定多数の人に関わるわずらわしさは金でけりをつけられるが（それをなくすために旅行者としてお金を払っている）、一緒に旅行する人間と関わる時に発生するわずらわしさからは逃れられない。念のために、一緒に旅行した友人は旅のパートナーとして申し分ない以上の人だった。それでも、それまで一緒に生活したことのない人間と３週間一緒にいれば、どうしても相手の嫌な側面が見えてくる（お互いに）。どこまでなら許容できるか、主張できるか、嫌ならいつでも離れられるのは事実だけど、どういう状態になったら離れるのか、全て自分で考えて、シミュレーションして、相手とコミュニケーションをとって、ということをするのは充実するけど、わずらわしいことだった。
あまりつきあいのないまま結婚して、新婚旅行が終わった瞬間に分かれるカップルが存在するとは聞いていたけど、それは十分にありえることだ、と改めて思う。

質問：めんどくさいことを考えなくても済むか
答え：視点の取り方を「いかに完璧にするか」から「いかに最悪の事態を防ぐか」に切り替えれば、めんどくさく考えなくて済んでお互いにハッピーになる。でもそのぶん自分でものを考えることと、相手に能力と支払った金以上のものを要求しないこと、何だって起こりうることを受け入れる姿勢が必要になる。
ものごとは基本的にうまくいくものだ、という視点（今の日本では顧客喪失恐怖症という疫病が流行っているので、少ない金でもこの視点を普通にもてるくらい、サービスがもらえる）を守ろうとすると、ものすごく疲れる。ので早めに放棄したら楽になった。
やりとりは、できること・できないこと、わかること・わからないことをはっきりさせながらすすむ。ペースが遅いけど、ストレスはない。
こちら「明日から３日間サファリツアーに申し込みたいけど可能か」
あちら「明日からは保証できない。明後日からなら大丈夫だ。明日は別のオプションがある」
こちら「それでは次の目的地へ行く飛行機の時間に間に合わないかもしれない。そちらで飛行機のスケジュールを確認して、それに合うようにサファリの日程を組むことは可能か。明日は別のことをしてみる」
あちら「それならできる。明日、あなたが帰ってくるまでには調べよう」
上記のやりとりが完結するまでに２時間かかったりする。何かがうまくいかないというより、物事が動くペースが日本に比べてとても遅い。というより、自然なペースでみな行動する。African Timeと名づけた。慣れたらとても快適な過ごし方だ。

質問：雑念から解放されるか
答え：雑念の方が解放されて、頭の中だけではなく体中をぐるぐるまわりつづけたようだ。「雑」として扱うのをやめて、なんかしら価値があるのだろう、とあきらめて好きにさせたら、けっこう楽しめた。旅行というめったにない機会だからこういうことについて考えてみよう、と「思考するべきこと」を設定して力んでみてもそう安直には考えがまとまらない。多分、そういう雑念は普段の生活で雑草扱いされていたけど、自分にとっては大切なことだったのだ。仕事とか生活とかに今ひとつかみ合わなかっただけで。

質問：ずっと楽しいか
答え：いいえとんでもありません。でも、ものすごい興奮も、静かな感動も、いやな人間も、退屈な時間も、失望した経験も、全てひっくるめて経験や学びの一部だ、it's part of the game と自覚してみれば、なんだって楽しいです。じゃ旅行する必要なんてないんじゃないか、と考えればそうですな。普段は、時間の使い方が「薄かった」と捉えると、すっきりする。旅行しているときには、「来なきゃよかった」という思考を避けるためになんか良い点を見つけてやろう、と無意識レベルで努力するので、時間の使い方が「濃い」。で、損したという感じはしない。

質問：もう一度行きたいか
答え：無理に特別なことをする必要はない、という実感を覚えたという意味では、もう一回行く必要はない。でも、やってみなければわからないことばかりだ、という意味では、また地球の裏側へ旅行してみたい。別の場所へ。

写真は整理して近日中にアルバムとして出します。その作業が終わって、ようやく旅行が完結するのかもしれない。

Public Address in Japan

So I came back from Southern Africa and the first moment I felt "Ah, I really came back" - was when the public address begun.
It started BEFORE I reach Japan - in the airplane. Altogether I heard four or five messages in Japanese.
"We will reach Narita international airport in xx minutes - the local time is xx:xx"
Fine, I don't think we need it (they said it in English already and it's also shown all over the screen) but still might be some benefit to some people. But of course that's only a starting point, a tip of the iceberg. I had a bad feeling and Murphy's Law ruled.
"The duty free-shop will be closed now. Please make sure you have finished your shopping"
"The video and audio service is now finished. We will collect the headsets so please be prepared"
"Please fill in the quarantine card before you enter the immigration gate"
"Thank you for choosing Singapore airlines..."

I don't want to think the executives in Singapore airlines decided to do this on their own - there must been some pressure from the Japanese side to include those messages because that's what everybody does here.

This flood of announcement continues forever.
At the ticket machine for the train, they guide you not to forget the change.
"Please take your 1000 yen note, please take your 1000 yen note, please take your 1000 yen note, ....."
(This, I would like to record and use it as the ring tone of my mobile phone one day)
In the train to Tokyo they added a special service: introducing what's in today's sales wagon.
"Fresh coffee, local xxxx blended with xxxxxxx, ....."

Sporadically the announcement does help. While you are in a middle of a over-crowded commuting train(I mean your comfort zone has been invaded completely and violently) and there is no way to approach either side of the train to look at the route map which is hidden somewhere amid the immense advertisement(and it makes this journey more riskier since the odds of finding the route map is four to one), the next-station announcement lets you know where you are.

I remember one more good thing. In the departing floor, they will NEVER forget that you are not on the plane yet. Always they are looking for somebody who hasn't got on the plane. In Africa I once experienced "no announcement" boarding. We reached the airport, knew the flight schedule looking at the sign board, checked in, sat at the waiting room, and saw the plane arrived. People got out, we got in. We knew it was our plane because there was no other airplane visible in the airport and the plane's company logo matched what's printed on the ticket. While all these happened, nobody said anything aloud. At least nothing broadcasted.

I must admit I felt somewhat nostalgic for this hyperannouncement too. Evil but definitely an essential part of my home country.
