Being different

I decided to blog with a rhythm, Japanese - English - Chinese. As long as the topic allows, I will try to maintain this routine.

These days I think a lot about what I am going to do in this life. I am 30 years old and still haven' t figured out my future (hey, it should be "present" )career. My current job is to work as a bridge between Japaenese and other Asian customer and the engineers in Israel, Ireland, and United States. It is difficult to define this kind of job. It is not a pure sales, nor a pure engineering. It is not Marketing either. (I do not have any idea what the marketing is for : well, at first those titles looked facsinating when I was looking for a job posting 3 years ago. It sounded cool, cutting-edge, and looked easy (no need to get your hands dirty). And since then I have seen some "marketing" guys, my illusion has faded away. Look, if you are seriously in the job, everybody has to make their hands dirty. And since the term "marketing" is not still common in Japan, every those guys seems to have difficulty doing their jobs: they have to explain to everybody what they are doing before starting the task, and most people regard the marketing position as cool, but actually looks down on them. (Do we need this guy who doesn't bring money nor product to us? Long-term strategy? Come on, we'll be out of cash supply while discussing these useless plans) That's tough, although I have no simpathy for the marketing team.
OK, so I am still in the rather vague position. Every time I think of my job, something told me I am just escaping from choosing my path: keep the option wide open and be ready to move to the next step (the "real me" syndrome, some might call). This is true, if not the whole. But I have another thought this few days. Being in the middle, or not belonging to a fixed state, might be my way of living.
I have always been a kind of "outsider" in every society I had to live in. When I was five my family moved to Taiwan and we spent 1 year there. After a brief stint in Japan then we went to Malta, the lovely yet boring island in Mediterranean sea. (OK, for a Japanese kid who doesn't speak English and surrounded by native Maltese who sometimes doesn't even know where Japan is, it was very, very far away from "boring".) When I came back I was 8 years old, never having a formal education in Japanese. People call me "Kikoku-Shijyo".
I was a stranger throughout this overseas period, literally yes, and since most of my identity has been formed out there, I continued being a stranger in Japan as well. I guess I still am, though I got a bit better at coping with Japanese culture. When I was a kid, I was bullied. When I was student, I was one of the "weird" guys. When I started working, I couldn't do any reasonable level of jobs(this has much, much less to do with cultural difference, I admit. No excuse, but I still don't think that was purely because of my general inablitity).
Whatever the reason is, I never felt I belong to somewhere although I always wished. When I found out that "being different" is one of my important personality, it is weird but I felt like I found my place. To be different, might be my place, where I belong.
I haven't made the decision on my career yet (and there is a very good chance I persue my current job) and I will make it no later than one year from now, but this personality will be one of the key elements in making this decision.

Blogging Rhythm

これまで約１ヵ月半、Blogを書いてみて何を発見したか：
・エントリーするのにかかる時間は平均４５分
書いていると時間が経つのを忘れる。書き始めるまではかったるいなあ、と思っていることが多いのだが。
・エントリーしたあとはしばらく脳の回転がとまらない
２時間ほどは、頭だけではなく体まであったまっている。しかし考えていることを搾り出したあとは、集中力が出ないのでおとなしく本を読むことも難しい。ので意味も無く外へ出てあてどもなくうろつくことが多々ある。かなり怖そう。
・どうも同じ言葉、言い回しを同じエントリーの中で繰り返して使いたがるようだ（既に「同じ」が２回）
特に英文のエントリーで。順に書いていくというより、思いついたことを書き散らかして後でくっつける、という方法をとるからこうなるのでは。かといって途中でつまってうなるより書けることから書いてしまったほうがよいことはよいだろうし。地道に読み返すしかないか。苦手だけど
・書くネタはあるに越したことはないけど絶対に必要なわけではない
ネタがあっても書いているうちに新しいことを思いついて軌道が変わることもしばしばで、これはこれでおもしろい。なにもネタがなくてもなんか書くか、といじっているうちに書けることもある（今回のように）。書き手としてはどっちも満足するけど、読むほうは？
・文章を読み込むスピードが速くなる
特に英語でそれを感じる。自然と上達してきただけなのかもしれないけど。なので中国語もへたっぴだけど書き殴れば、時報をすんなりと読めるようになるのも意外と早いかも。
・アクセス数が気になる
Rebecca Bloodのhandbookの教えによれば、わざわざアクセス数とblogの質を下げようとしているわけだ。。現在１日平均１７クリック（そのうち一回は自分）
・自分が読みたいblog=自分が書きたいblog
おこがましいけどそんな実感が。まあ自分のテイストははっきりしつつあるような。Blogを大雑把に３種類にわければ１．情報分類　２．日記　３．コラム　となりそうだけど、自分は３．がメインのblogが好きなのですね。ではこのblogは？？
・肝心なのは何が起こったかではなく、どうしてそう思うか
英語で言えばWhatではなくてWhyが大切だと思う。どれだけいろいろなことが書いてあっても、書いた本人の視点が欠けているか、明らかにされない文章はまず読んでいて面白いとは思わない。読Xや朝X新聞のような客観的と呼ばれる文章がますますつまらなくなってきた。そもそも客観的な文章なんてあるのだろうか。掲載する記事の話題を選んだ時点で既に主観が入っているのだ。そういうお堅い日本の新聞の文章は客観的という大義名分の下で自分の視点を明らかにしない（責任をとらない）楽ちんさをとっているのでは。
・では今後はどうするのか
とりあえず日英中をローテーションで書いてみようかと考えている。リズムを作って、blogのエントリーを特別なことではなく生活の一部、にしてみたい。

あと一つ、とても気になっていることがあるけど少し客観的になれたら書きます。

我第一次的进口

上星期一我跟我的车厢答应了我用汉语在主贝寄论文有关中国或者学汉语。这是第一次的进口所以我不想写难的，复杂的话题。《车厢要看这个文章--她应该想能看懂》
我有两个重要目的。一个是通过写汉语提高我的汉语水平。 第二个是对能看懂汉语的人表达我的看法，办法，想法，我发现的东西。
介绍很方便的英语-汉语词典。两个要钱一个不要钱。
要钱的词典是这个软件Babylon。 或者，这个电子词典好易通。
不要钱的词典是这个网站点。
虽然我应该详细介绍这些学汉语的材料，但是已经累得太多了。等一等最后我想好介绍。。。
写这次的文章，花了两个小时。慢慢慢慢。。

Punch-Drunk Love

This movie starts rather dull, ends abruptly, and less physically funny among other Adam Sandler films. And I cannot help loving this film. This is the second best Paul Thomas Anderson work. The best one is of course, Boogie Nights. (I admittedly have seen only 3 of his film altogether. so Magnolia comes last.)
What strikes me most about this film is its open optimism (or we call happy ending). In Boogie Nights and in Magnolia, there was never an explicit happiness at the ending - always a slight sign of hope. And the stories were not so straightforward. Boogie... was a chronicle which has multiple characters and stories tangled together. Magnolia only separated each episodes but had the same type of structure. But here, there is only one story and it is straightforward: Adam Sandler falls in love, gets troubled, and comes back stronger than before.
Then why this movie seems to become one of the most memorable film in 2003, for me? Probably it is more about the actors themselves rather than the plot. There are so many actors who I love to see on the big screen. Adam Sandler, Emily Watson, Luis Guzman, and YES, Philip Seymour Hoffman. Who can resist such an incredible ensemble of cast? They provide exactly what we are looking for - Adam Sandler is slow yet pure, Emily Watson is a psyco yet also pure, Luis Guzman is freaky but lovely, and Philip Seymour Hoffman is - whatever he does, I cannot take my eyes away from him. And last but not least, I love happy ending these days - of course it is because I am getting pessimistic about our real situation (and there are many others as well, I guess).

Learning new things

ふと考えついたことを。
これまで新しく何か（仕事やら勉強やら）を始めるときに、「自分にぴったりしたものはどこかにないかな」とまずは探していたようだが、それは間違っているし、それ以上につまらない考えかたなのではないかと。
間違っているというのは自分に完璧にフィットしつづけるものなどありえないから。自分という存在が固定されているならありうるだろうけど、常に少しずつ変化していて、しかもそれが気まぐれに起こることが多いので、それに都合よくあわせてくれるものなんてあるわけないわな。
つまらないというのは、そうやってなんとなく「ぴったり」そうなものというのは自己満足と一緒か、紙一重の場合が多いから。楽しい、だけだとそうなる。新しい視点、知識、体験が得られるものこそを選ぶとしたら、気持ちいいだけでは絶対にすまないから。
結局、刺激の少ない、よく言えば無難な、悪く言えば楽なだけなことにおさまりがちだったのではと。好奇心が大きいことと要領が悪いことが幸いしてか、痛い目にあって（結果的に）学んできたようだが。。
失敗しても立ち直れる範囲で、絶対にやりたくないわけではない範囲で、積極的に向いていないことやしんどいことを試してみようかなと。
思いついたときには新鮮味を感じたこれらのことも、書いて眺めてみると見事に当たり前だ。３０にしてこの程度のことに感心するとは・・

Every road leads to Rome

This story was introduced by Eran, a while ago.
We have to track down the history 2000 years to spot the original specification of the Space Shuttle's boosters rail. Why? - just read it.
I heard a similar story (less complicated) when studying electrical engineering in the university. Why does the current flows from plus to minus, while the elecrons actually travel from minus to plus?
And considering all these specs which comprise the IT network something, after they have been coined or pinched 20 years ago by some smart computer geeks(some obviously by accident), they are fixed forever... I wonder 2000 years from now someone finds out the same kind of thing and makes an equally or better weird story.

1 Yen Entrepreneurship

以前Coaching Showerでお話を聞いた方が主催されたセミナーへ行ってきた。
２部構成で、前半が講師の経歴と起業にいたるまでのいきさつ、起業についての発見など。後半が１円起業についての法律・税金Q&Aコーナー。１時間半＋４５分の組み合わせは集中力の持続、という意味ですごくちょうど良いのでは。
・実績や歴史が長くなくとも（講師の方は起業してまだ半年未満）、試行錯誤のいきさつをまとめることで立派にセミナーとして成立できるのだなと感じた。少なくとも自分は。語る内容の質（深みと視点）が問われる意味ではしんどいのだろうが、「もうちょっと経験を積まないとそんなことやれない」と思いがちな時にはこのことを思い出してみるとよいか。
・Q&Aコーナーは講師が自分の経験に基づいた疑問を税理士にぶつけて、税理士が回答するそのやりとりを、会場の全員が聞く、という方式だったが、これはなかなか面白い。あまり堅苦しくなく、かつ生身の情報を得られるという点でいいやり方だと思う。
・法律と税金についての知識を得ること（あるいは知識を持っている人間を雇うこと）は、僕がぼんやりと思っているよりもはるかに重要なのでは。何をやるにしても、国家が決めたことには逆らえません。それらを軽く見ることは、ゲームのルールを覚えずにやり始めることと同じかも。ゲームと現実が違うのは「復活の呪文」を唱えられないことだ。
・事業計画を決めるときに、売上を最初に決めてはいけない（税理士の方より）。増資するための準備金、役員報酬、利益目標、の順に積み上げていく方式をとるべき。結果的にそれらの達成に必要な売上高が浮かび上がる。確かRich Dad, Poor Dadでも同じようなことを書いてあった気がする。確かにそうだわな。

ちなみに会場は六本木ヒルズ内の森ビルだった。講師の方は建設当時から、気になっていてあそこでやりたいなあ、と思っていたらしい。あまり安くない受講料の大半は会議室の使用料に消えたようだ。でもまあ僕も森ビルへ行く機会など他に思いつかないから、いい経験だった。
会場のアカデミーヒルズ内には喫茶店と組み合わせた最新の本と雑誌を閲覧できるコーナーがあり、眺めのいい（４９階）環境でゆったりと勉強や読書ができるようだ。利用するには会員になる必要がある。図書館と違うのは最新のビジネス書がそろっていることとゆったりとした静かな環境、コーヒーなどをゆっくりと飲めることだろう。それらに価値を置く人にとっては、月６，０００は高くないと思う。リッチな気分になれるし。図書館なみに込みまくっていなければいいのだが・・・それさえクリアになれば食欲をそそられる。

Illusion

2XUPさんのblogエントリーより。
これはこれまでに見た視覚的トリックの中で最も強烈なのかもしれない。AとB、同じ色なのですね。どれだけ時間をかけても、目が慣れて来ない。
ここに理論的な背景が詳しく述べられている。いずれ時間を作って読もうか。こういうのがほいほいとアップデートされて、無料で読めてしまう。本当にいいのですか？と一瞬思うけど、それがいずれ普通になってしまう。僕もこれほどではないけど何か書けたら、Web上で公開しようと思う。この人のように、これまでにいろいろな資料を公開して学ばせてくれた先達に敬意を表して。

Personality Type

以前ここでMBTI(Myers - Briggs Type Indicator)方式にのっとった性格判断をやってみた。
これは人間の行動様式を次の４つの区分でどちらかにわけてみようか、という見方によっては乱暴な判断だ。
Extraversion（外向）・Introversion（内向）
Sensing（感覚）・iNtuition（直観）
Thinking（思考）・Feeling（感情）
Judging（判断）・Perceiving（知覚）
僕の結果はINTP（すみません、日本語でのタイプ解説が見つからなかった）。まとめると、「学者」タイプであるらしい。
「人と交わるより理論的な研究を好む・いろいろなアイデアに興味を持つ・独立独歩を好んで社交的な集まりにあまり関心はない・感情より論理を優先する」
なんかそのとおりっぽいなあ、と我ながら感心したし、なにかさっぱりしたものを感じた。ま、これでいいか、といった何か自分で自分を許した感じのような。
この方式のいいところは、良い・悪いの判断を行わないところである。あくまでもその人の持つ傾向を、客観的に浮かび上がらせるのが目的であり、さらに決め付けることもまたしないところに特徴があるらしい。
「人も変わっていくものですし、質問への答え方も体調や気分で毎回異なりますから結果はあくまでも現時点での目安です、これからなりたい自分に近づいていくと考えることも何ら不自然では有りませんし、この診断によってそのための（とりあえずの）視点を提供することができればいいな、という程度に考えてください」というのが主催者のコメントだった。
こういう緩いものの捉え方は好きだ。普段自分が固く物事を定義しようとしているからだろうか。
日本人で一番多いタイプが、ESFJで、ちょうど僕のタイプの正反対になる。「親しみやすい・調和を好む・人の為に役立とうとする・計画に沿って実行することに重きをおく」
そして僕のINTPタイプは、絶対数としては少ないが性格診断を受けにくる人の割合の中では多いそうだ。理由は、あまり社会でいい目にあわないことが多くて悩んでいる人が多いから。なぜかものすごく納得してしまいました。これを知っただけでもお金払って受けてみた価値はあるよ。５年前に知っていたら人生観がかなり変わっていたのだろうけど、今は「他者との差異」こそが自分がサバイバルできている、またこれからサバイバルできるであろう大きな理由だと思っているのでそれほど。でも確信が深まった意味ではとてもよかった。

Tips on writing the blog

I have two guidelines for writing the weblog. One in online, the other one in offline.

Online one is 10 tips on writing the living web. I found this because Joi Ito was introducing this article as a good material in some japanese bss.
All of the tips included here has valid viewpoints, and here are some quotes which I felt specially important for me - if I am going to write my style of weblog.

Don’t tell us what happened: tell us why it matters. Don’t tell us your opinion: tell us why the question is important.

Write for yourself; you are, in the end, your most important reader.

To be honest with the world, you may need to be honest with your mother; if you cannot face your mother, perhaps you are not ready to write for the world.

Offline one is The Weblog Handbook.
There are so many in-depth truths and wisdom in this book which the author has found out by herself while deeply engaged in the weblog community, I cannot introduce even a hint of them here. Just buy it and read - whether you are an experienced blogger or a tech-noble who have just thought of writing one, this book will be of help for a long time. Here is one quote I like (but I admit sometimes I cannot help myself from watching the visitor statics ;-)

If your object in keeping a weblog is to gain a wide audience, I advise you to quit today. Webloggers who care about the size of their audience are always unhappy. ..... If you are going to keep a weblog, it must be for the joy of writing alone. You will never have enough readers, and if that matters, you will always be disappointed.

Every time I put an entry in this blog, I check whether that piece was written according to the above rules. I was never 100% satisfied, but so far, I don't think I am way beyond those principles. Of course, those rules are not mandatory for everybody in any sense - let's put in this way, somebody picked up the unspoken words which were circulating in my body, and I found them earlier than I crystallized by myself. (Though I admit they had done a job far better than I would have.)
After all, every single weblog I love seems to be written more or less according to the standards shown in the above two resources. It is extremelly fulfilling and encouraging to know there are people who seem to share the same value and speak out strongly.

Confession of a Dangerous Mind

The main actor of this chronicle is Sam Rockwell, one of the most ordinary-looking star I have ever seen. I don't think I can recognize him in another film easily(or I should already have). Let's try in his upcoming film, Matchstick Men if I have a chance.He is so un-impressive looking in the first sight, but, this might be the biggest strength he has(or I hope). Like Chris Cooper in Adaptation, I bet he might one day become a character-actor who can completely transform himself. After all, George Clooney had chose him in his first director debut film(he cannot fail if he is thinking direction seriously), and there has to be a reason behind this casting.
Brad Pitt and Matt Damon both had cameo apperance. Funny thing is, the camera moved slowly enough in front of them so that the audience can recognize them easily. In most opportunity I get disgusted by this behavior(if you want him/her to be apparent, why don't you credit them). This time since their make-up were so funny and so apparant, I took it as a joke. It was funny, I chuckled but the other audience didn't respond...could be different in the United States. Usually there are always some American who laughs at these subtle jokes which Japanese audience overlooks, but this time I didn't hear anybody laughing...Was it supposed to be funny?

Fullfilling job

CTIの研修でご一緒した方が書かれた夢さがしエトセトラを読んだ。（それにしてもAmazonでは何故坂本龍一著、と紹介されているのだろう？）
中学生、高校生に対して興味のある職業をアンケート調査し、その結果に基づいて各界から３０人のインタビューが、どのようないきさつで今の仕事をしているのかと、若い人たちへのアドバイスを中心に納められている。
この本を読むといいだろうな、と心に浮かんだ人たちは次の２つのグループだ。
１．本を出版したいと、ぼんやりにでも考えているけど具体的にどうすればいいのか、不安な人たち
２．思春期の子供を持つ親

１．については「素人」として本を始めて作り始めた、といういきさつがあるし、それ以上に感じたのは読んでいて「試行錯誤」の跡が時々伝わってくるのだ。具体的にはインタビューの流れが、毎回すこしずつ違うように感じる。これはプロが作ったインタビュー集でも同じようなことが起こるのだろうが、結果として出来上がる本からその跡が伝わってくることはめったに無い。
例えば所々流れがあまりスムーズにいかないところがあったりする。回答者に多く語る気が無いのか、質問がつぼをついていないのか、回答がさらりと終わってしまうために著者があれもこれも、と質問をたくさん出して、何かを引き出そうと苦労しているところなど。質問の項目は多くなるのだが、それに比例して内容が濃くなるわけではない（コーチングの練習や、交流会での会話などで、自分が同じような苦労をしたことを思い出したため、なぜかぐっときてしまった）。また、回答者から個人的な、深い内容の話が引き出されたところなどは、質問の数に関係なく読んでいて（本来の著者の意図どおり）ぐっとくる。
インタビューが時系列で並べられていたら、著者が経験を積んでインタビューに「流れ」を作り出せるようになってくる過程までもが見えたのだろうな。時々「あら」のようなものが見えても、本来のテーマさえはっきりしていれば大丈夫なのだな、と読んでいて感じた。これから本を作ろうとしている人は大いに参考になるのでは。
２．については、まず「１０代の若者にとって、親の世代のアドバイスや経験はすでに参考にならないのでは？」ということを感じてしまったことから始まる。インタビューを受けた人のアドバイスを見渡すと、次のような傾向があるようだ。
・とにかくやってみることが大切
・その仕事についてからも、勉強はずっと続く
・自分の専門分野以外のことについても好奇心を持って勉強することが大切
また、その職業につくまでの経験については、意外とふらふら（寄り道）している時期が長かった人が多い（特に年配の人に）。ただ、結局は子供のころにやりたかったことに近づいていくようだ。
これらのことは全く持ってその通りだと思う。だが、今の、またこれからの社会にもそのまま当てはまって役に立つとはどうしても思えない。
ネガティブになっていく面からいうと、
社会が全体的にリスクをとることを恐れている状況で、「とにかくやってみる」ことに積極的になれるだろうか？初めて仕事についた瞬間から「即戦力」を要求されるような理不尽な状況で、いろいろなことに興味を持ったり、ましてや寄り道などしたりする余裕が得られるだろうか？「即戦力」＝「既にある程度の適応をしている」を意味するからだ。
これらのことは全て程度問題であり、いかなる状況であれ「できなくなる」ことはないだろう。だが、明らかに親の世代は、今と比較してこうした「試行錯誤」がやりやすい、余裕のある社会で生きてきたのだ。サラリーマンが夜遅くまで働いていた時代は過去のことである、と錯覚しやすいが、実際はリストラされずに働いている今のサラリーマンの負担は増加しており、しかもこのままでも将来はなんとかなるだろうと本気で考えている人間は天才か、ただの馬鹿のどちらかだ。今となっては上にあげられたようなアドバイスは、都合のいい理想論、と見るほうが自然なのでは、と考えてしまった。
今の僕がそれらのアドバイスにうなずいて、かつ実行できる環境にいるのは、仕事も収入も時間も余裕があって、いろいろなことを実行しつつも考えられる立場にいるからだ。余裕が無くなったらたちまち視野も心も理想も狭くなるだろう。そして１０代のうちからそんな余裕を得られるのはほんの一握りのはずだ。
ポジティブになっていく面でいうと、
親の世代と今の１０代の世代で決定的に違うのは「選択肢の多様さ」だろう。本に納められた３０種類の仕事が、参考になるなど２０年前でもありえなかったはずだ。
良くも悪くも親の世代と、今の若者の世代では、生きている前提条件が全く異なる。この本に納められたインタビューは、どちらかと言えば親の世代の心情に近いのでは、と思ったのだ。だとすれば、かえって１０代の子供を持つ親がこの本を読み、参考としてもう一度希望を探すことを始める、というシナリオのほうがなんかうなずけるしてっとりばやいのでは。結局、親が夢を持たない状況で子供に希望をもつことを期待するのは不可能に近いし、アンフェアだろう。子供に希望を持ってもらいたいのならば、まず親が持つべきなのだ。こんな単純なことが、どうして声高に叫ばれないのかは興味深い。誤解されると困りますが、本の著者を責める意図は全くありません。
では若い世代が真に参考とできるようなインタビューとして、どんな選択肢があるのだろう？思うに、これから日本が歩もうとしている社会を既に先取りしている国で、夢を捨てずに生きている人たちから話を聞く、というのが意外と効くのでは？思い浮かぶのは、イギリス。日本と同じようだな、と感じるのは１．ルールが厳格なところ　と２．経済の絶頂期を過ぎたこと　３．少子高齢化が（日本ほどではないが）進んでいる　の点。ヨーロッパ全般でもいいのかもしれない。
もうひとつ、日本人だけど２０代前半までの成功者、にインタビューの対象者を限定することも思い浮かぶけどなんか歪になりそうな気が。相当とんがった人が集まるのだろうから、「こんなこと私にはとてもできない」と思わせる本になるのだろうか・・・

最後に、この職業の一覧になかったカテゴリーの人たちがいる。「（普通の）サラリーマン」と「（普通の）公務員」と「フリーター」だ。中高生のアンケートを元に作られたのだから、こういう人たちには魅力を感じていない、ということだろうか・・・アンケートの結果を見ていないので（見たいなあ）断定はできないけど。しかしあえて断定して考えると、過半数を占める階層が「魅力がない」とみなされている社会というのはなんなんだろう、末期症状だろうか、と一瞬考えた。僕も、上に上げた３つの言葉に魅力は感じない。もちろんはっきりとした目標があれば形態など関係ないのだろうから、一般論として。
「大手ゼネコンの総務部に勤続２０年、リストラにおびえる加藤さん」なんてのはリアルでいっぱいいそうだけど、夢じゃないわな。そんなのがひとりぐらいいたらいいなー、と想像しながらにやにやしていました。

September 11th

2 years have passed since I heard this story.
I was drinking with my colleague and our sales representative in Kyushu, and this sales guy got the message in Keitai from his wife, which says "a jet plane crashed into NY city". I didn't get panicked, nor surprised. I guess I couldn't imagine what it is like at all. But my stomach got slightly heavy and some omnious feeling crept in that finally the "sign" that the world has changed fundamentally had come.
Watching all the news coverage made that feeling stronger. It is not that the world started to change after that incident, rather the world has been changing fundamentally, and that was one of the consequence (although it could have been much less tragic).
What is changing in what way? There's a lot, but the most serious phenomenon is the seperation between haves and have-nots. It is everywhere - the North and the South, the employed and the unemployed, the star soccor players and all the others, and so on. Only a handful of winners take everything, and the rest can barely survive in ever-worsening conditions. It is as if we are going back to the days of pre-WWII.
On the other hand, I started to witness another wave of change from a year ago. The emergence of the power of individuals, through the world of weblogs and entrepreneurs. Now we do have the most free days of our lives - the freedom of choice and thinking. Indeed in most cases they are still practically illusions, but at least we have succeeded in taken the limit off inside our mind. We can, "think" of doing what we want and actually "learn" how to achieve it. Of course it was still able to do it 20 years ago, but how easy was it in those days?
The curious thing is, this two contradicting incidents are seemingly occuring from the same reason - the advance of technology, especially that of the Internet. What will the world be when this current turmoil settles down? I guess, people will be divided in levels. Not in the traditional cultural context, but in an intellectual context. 1. People who have chances 2. People who look for chances 3. People who doesn't know about chances. Basically people are divided in 1 and 3, a few will come out of 1 or 3 and becomes 2. 2 is a temporary level and those people will eventually become 1 or 3.
The more easier you can cross the boundary between these 3 levels (in has to be in both direction), the world will be a better place, but I am rather pessimistic about this. It is increasingly getting easy to fall from 1 to 3, but very difficult for the other way around. At least, I would like to stay in 1 and help people who are struggling in 2, like me now.

Introducing myself

直接会ったことが無くても以前から知っている人（尊敬していたり、憧れていたりする）がいたとき、声をかけるべきか？かけないでおくべきか？
これまでどちらかと言えば、かけないでおくことが多かった。恥ずかしくて気後れするからだと思うが、一旦声をかけて恥ずかしさが消えてしまうと、逆にずうずうしくしゃべりつづける、という悪い癖もあり、この場合は　とても気分がいい→自分のしたことに恥ずかしくなって気分が悪い　という気分の波を必ず経験し、後味が悪くなるからだ。
先日、とあるアドバイスをいただいて力が抜けた気分になった。どうしても声をかけたい、という欲求がある場合は別として、気後れしているときに無理に話し掛けることはないのだ。いずれ、自然に話せる時は来るときは来るのだろう。
しかし、これまた先日あったけど、声をかけた人がたまたま名前を知っている有名な人であった場合は・・・あきらめてパニックになろうか。

IAC BBQ

日頃体力を使わないので、アウトドア（らしきもの）を楽しんできました。

バーベキューの準備段階から早めに参加したのだが、これがよかった。僕はこのグループに参加してまだ２ヶ月、イベントも３回目なので、知っている人も少なければ勝手もわかっていない。でもとにかくみんなと一緒にバーベキューの準備をして体を動かすことで、ずいぶんと気持ちがほぐれた。心細いときには、会話を探すより、なにか力になれることを探して協力することが、とても有効だ。結局はいろいろな人といろいろな話ができたのだけど。例によって時々「ひとり」になっていたが。まだ、ずーっと皆と一緒、というのはつらいようだ。
少し離れたテーブルでは会社ぐるみらしき団体がビールを飲みながら熱く語っていたが、例によって会社の方針やら客先の扱い方やらの「演説」（ハイキングのリーダー、Kanakoさん曰く）がちらほらと。こんな山奥まで来てまでそんな話をしなきゃならんのか、とげんなりしながらも大変だなあ、と同情してしまった。彼らは恐らく普段からそれ以外の話題や、時間の過ごし方をよく知らないのだ。多分本人たちもどこかで疑問を持ちながら、他にすることがないのでいつもの話題に落ち着くのだろう。ひとごととは思えない。自分だって五反田〜新宿の山手線沿線以外の世界をどれだけ知っているのだろう？普段考えていることだって、自己啓発というキーワードを抜いたら何が残るのだろう？

Caroline & Yuriko Seminar

Went to this EA-Tokyo held seminar.

Interesting was the contrast between this two women. Yuriko-san seemed to be an ordinary person who had done and is going to do an extraordinary thing. She was a bit shy, gentle, and mild-hearted. Caroline seemed to be a person who might have done something in any field she decided to be engaged. So detemined with an aura of strong will and desire coming out of her body. Sometimes I had to tell myself this person is not Terrie Lloyd.
Watching these two sitting side by side and giving their stories with a storng sense of partnership, I thought you cannot define somebody is or can be an entrepreneur or not by only looking at the surface. If it was only Caroline at the speech, I might have gotten in the trap thinking entrepreneurship must be natural born, a gift.
The most impressive comment came from Caroline, about her hiring process. "I never look at the details in the resume, never ask who he/she has achieved in the past. It's not what you can bring to my company. Rather, it is what you would like to do or learn in what condition, and whether I can provide the environment and help you, grow up together."

After the seminar, for the first time, I took part in the networking session. About 50 people chatting and exchanging information. In the past two seminars at EA-Tokyo, I actually chickened out of this part, mostly because I was afraid of realizing I have nothing to offer, among people who are supposedly full of stories to tell. I just gave it a try to know what I would actually feel and learn - I cannot keep staying in my confortable zone, pretending I am not making any action in order not to embarass others.
Anyway I did have several conversation, and from my point of view, I had learned a great deal of things though I don't reveal all of them here and everybody is extremelly generous and open-minded, relaxed yet serious. What I could offer anything to other people is still a questionable item and I need to think about it seriously(and there were a couple of moments I knew it wasn't the right time to talk, but I couldn't stop myself).
One thing I would like to swear. Someday I might be in the position of giving lecture or sharing my experience to other relatively less-experienced people, like today's Caroline and Yuriko. Then if someone comes up and asks me stupid questions or telling his/her (relatively) shallow stories, I will treat them as serious as possible, never blushing them off at the first trial. It doesn't mean somebody treated me in that manner - completely the opposite, and I appreciate their stance at the bottom of my heart.

Adaptation.

The basic impression is that this movie is simply 2 hours of naval-gazing, but I enjoyed it pretty much. (not so much as Being John Malcovich).
The media tends to emphasize the clever plot, but the most impressive thing that struck me was... Chris Cooper's acting(I really think the academy award went to the right person) and "collision" scene. For the former, Nicholas Cage also did a fine acting (and he deserves the academy nomination I think) and this made an interesting contrast between Chris Cooper. No matter how good Nicholas Cage's acting is, what I felt is he was still "Nicholas Cage". The way he talks, shouts, cries, whines...everything is within the prescribed image of him, though in a very sophisticated manner. Chris Cooper on the other hand, changed his image totally different from the former roles which made him famous. I saw a totally diffrent guy from the gay father in American Beauty or the cold-hearted spy agent in The Bourne Identity. It would be meanless to point out which acting style is superior, simply Chris Cooper's approach looks more valuable since it is much fewer than Nicholas Cage's approach.
The latter was the most realistic and dry scene I have ever seen. As if it was taken by some real victim's hand camera at the crash's moment. Although violent, it was watchable thanks to the sudden and dry approach. I tend to cover my eyes when there is too much expectation built up for blood scene.

This conversation caught me in the very deep level. (not literally correct, but politically correct, I guess)

聴講してきました。
会場にいる人たちは２０代〜３０代が中心、男女比は８：２くらいだろうか。人口密度は高すぎたが（午前９：３０の山手線五反田駅くらい）、マニアックでもなく、堅苦しくもなく、ふざけてもなく、リラックスしているけど真剣な雰囲気はとても気持ちよかった。会場の様子はこちらから
以前聴講した1IMCでも同じような雰囲気を感じたが、参加者がみんな、知的かつ魅力的に見える会は他にあまりない。結局、Weblogという媒体の魅力よりも、それを利用している人たちが魅力的なのに（まずは）惹かれてその世界に足を踏み入れつつあるのだ。これはコーチングの世界への入り方と同じだ。自分に当てはめると、もし何かを世間に広めたいなら、自分自身が魅力的であったり、信頼されるに足る存在であることの方がやっていることの内容より（まずは）重要だ、ということだと思う。そう考えるとしんどいが。
講演を聴いていて、改めて自覚できたことがあった。自分の、物事を理解する仕方だ。まずは大枠で概念を捉えて、それを消化しきった後に始めて個々の細かい要素のことを気にかけられる。大枠が理解できていないと、いつまでも要素に入っていけないのだ。Weblogの個々の要素について解説が加えられているとき、用いられている単語はほぼ知っているにも関わらずほとんど理解できた気がしなかった。ばしばしと精密なコメントを放つ他の方々の発言を聞いて、同じ言語を用いている感じがあまりしない。Weblogの概念をまだ自分なりに解釈できていないのが大きいと思う。これまたコーチングと同じく、Weblogを簡単に説明することができないし。「個人で発信するジャーナリズム」と名づけてみたけど今ひとつだ。
最初に入った会社で、まず電子回路の設計をやらされたが壮絶になにもできなかった。３年経っても簡単な製品一つ仕上がらない。ちょっと前までトラウマだったこのことが、それはそうだろうな、と今では少し温かい目で振り返ることができる。これもまた、自分についての「大枠」がなんとなく消化できつつあるからだろう。
丁度講演された田口さんの著書が店頭販売？されていたので購入、読んだ。平田さんの著書は１ヶ月ほど前に購入して読んでいた。後者はMovable TypeでWeblogを始めよう、htmlも勉強しよう、と気合を入れて買ったその３日後にTypepadサービスが開始され、もちろん部屋の隅で埃をかぶりつつある。念のために、とても懇切丁寧な本で、Weblogの歴史や特徴について改めて整理するいい機会になったし、MovableTypeやTrackbackやらRSSやらの専門用語のつながりを始めて自覚させてくれました。ただ、Movable Typeインストール環境の解説を読んだ瞬間に遠い目になってしまいそれは当分直らないだろう。あるいは一生。これで技術サポートの肩書きをつけ、仕事でCコンパイラやらリアルタイムOSやらの話をしているのは間違っている。どこかが。
今回買った方をざっと読んだところより初心者向けの内容で、早めに買っておくべきだった。中でも一番役に立ちそうなのが、Weblogに関連した情報、ツールを提供してくれるサイトの情報がてんこもりなことだ。これまで断片的に聞いただけで、よくわかっていなかった便利なサービスがきれいに整理されて、いっぱい紹介されている。
会場で渡されたカラフルなラベルに自分の名前を書いて（蛍光緑色でISAO）胸に貼っていたのだが、五反田に帰り着いて韓国料理屋に入り、石焼ビビンバを食う瞬間にはじめて付けっぱなしだったことに気がついた。なにもわかっていないって幸せだ。

It seems this has been introduced in a lot of sites already. Here is a very good article discussing this matter.
I once read (Japanese book) that the biggest reason which made English the standard language is more of its openness which makes people from various backgrounds communicate easily, than the side effect of British empire once dominated the globe. I am not sure this is correct, but no reason to oppose. More, in this context Japanese is a perfect example of a complete oppositeness to English. Everybody who communicates in Japanese must put him or her in a certain vertical position before starting the conversation. Customer/Supplier, Senior/Junior, Older/Younger, almost every relationship has a certain difference in the position : they are never at the same level. And since this is explicitly shown in the language level (for example the "I" for the senior and the "I" for junior is a different word) we are almost always aware of which one is in the stronger position, it is very rare to cross that boundary. Imagine a guy whose younger brother(weaker) happened to be a customer of him(stronger). These two will have a weird feeling when they have to talk to each other in front of others. Quite different than English, ha...
This might explain part of the reason why we see so few English-speaking Japanese. I guess it has nothing to do with Japanese DNA or Asian culture or sushi. The more you are used to communicate in Japanese in the traditional sense (rather vertical relationship), the more you are far away from the English world(rather horizontal relationship), difficult to master this language. So this quote from the above linked article doesn't seem to apply to us much..

For one, English is one of the most linguistically developed languages of the world, i.e. its basics are very easy to learn.

Chinese Textbook

中国語（北京語）を学ぶ際のテキストとして他の人にもぜひ勧めたいものが２冊。
一冊目は現在通っている中国語教室で指定されたもので、ずばり中国語の入門。
これ以上無骨にできません、と訴えかけるような無愛想なデザインとこれ以外どう呼ぶの、と人を突き放すタイトル（しかもフォントは明朝体）を併せ持ち、かつ書かれたのが２０年前、と現在とはかけ離れつつあるであろう中国を見据えて書かれた本である。本屋で表紙買いした人の数は累計で１０人いるだろうか？音声を収録したバージョン（期待にこたえてカセット）もあり、それも買いました。
しかしこの本以上に的確、シンプル、明確なテキストは他にあまりない（はず）。他にも何冊か衝動買いした経験から。今から勉強をはじめよう、と考えている方はこの本一冊を手元において、学校に通いつつも読みつづけるとかなり勉強した実感がわきます。
もう一冊はStarter Oxford Chinese Dictionary.　初心者向けの英中辞典＋中英辞典がセットになったもの。英語と中国語両方の勉強ができる上、簡単な単語がなるべくたくさんの例文で（しかもこれまた簡単な例文）で紹介されているし、文字も大きくて見やすく、数の数え方や挨拶の仕方などは別枠で特集を組んで例をあげてくれている。徹底的に初心者の立場に立って作られているのがよくわかる。
何よりもすばらしいのは、例文をなるべく簡単にかつ普段使いそうなものにしているところだ。簡単な構造の文章を繰り返し学ぶことは２つの意味でとても大切だと思う。1. 「学べている」と実感することで学習に自信がついて継続できる 2. 日常に即応用できる

「中国語の入門」のタイトルを見て思うのは、シンプルなタイトルで中身のレベルが高い、というのはとても新鮮でかっこいいな、ということだ。本を売るためには、タイトルに手を抜いてはいけないと"Rich dad, Poor dad"に書いてあり、それはその通りだと思う。詳細は忘れたが、凡庸なタイトルを推薦した本のエージェントに対して筆者が"If I choose that title, I can sell only two books. One to my friend and one to my mother. Worse, they will want it for free"とか言う。
ので本屋に行って新刊書のタイトルを眺めると、世の中に不可能なことなどない気にさせられる。でもタイトルだけで買った本は５０％以上の確率で中身が薄い（と感じる）。そうやって失敗することが多かったので、他の信頼する人が推薦・読んでいる本を読むことにしてきた。決してタイトルで気を引かせる本の質が悪いと決め付けるつもりはないけど、期待が大きい分落胆は３倍返しでしんどく感じてしまうので、どうしても色目で見てしまうのだ。

Only the rich can afford kids

The results of a recently concluded survey by the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry have shown that couples in which both partners work in management have the highest birthrates, while unemployed men have the highest death and suicide rates, according to ministry sources.

I believed that relatively poor people have more kids than the riches, but I cannot deny this story. Moreover, I am beginning to fall for this report. How much do we need to afford kids in today's Japan?
I heard it won't be less than 30 million yen/kid. Have three kids, and you can buy a decent house in the center of Tokyo. Without loan. That's a LOT.
